Attn NC hunters....

Anyone ever hunt Butner Falls of Neuse game land?
I know some guys that use to go down thay way 25-30 years ago and they said that area was thick with coons.
I would like to take a trip down there if this is true but last year a friend of mine went to some game lands down east and it was swampy and cutover it turned into a four hour wasted drive.
Can anyone tell me anything about this game land and if it would be worth a four hour drive?
The game lands map looks like some of it would be tricky to hunt due to the "archery zones" and "safety zones".
When the game lands map legends says a safety zone means no hunting, reckon that means you just can't discharge a firearm so just running and treeing coons is ok as long as you leave them?
If anyone could help me out here on either of these ???? I would be most greatful.

The best thing to do is call and talk to a WRO in that county. Get the right answers and avoid trouble.

I hunt Falls Lake about every other week. The walking is fair, rolling hills in most areas, the timber is good, the coons are thin. The Falls lake Gamelands are hunted by alot of locals....I personally leave the rifle at home when hunting there but i think some others tag them pretty good.
On an average night hunting at falls I will make 3 to 4 turnouts, tree a couple of coons, and walk alot. However the walking is good so that makes up for it. But I re-iterate it is alot of walking and while i have had one or two great nights i have had nights where i walked the entire hunt for one tree. There is no driving on the game lands.

If you decide to come down I'll take you with me. I only hunt one dog, a female Redbone. She is not ill and I normally am not ill either :-)

There is camping available at one of the State parks, or at a Park called BW Wells.

The safe zones/No hunting...some are state parks and buffer zones for recreational areas.

Thanks Chris for all the info., you have been most helpful. Sounds like it would be no better than where I currently hunt but if I decide to come down that way, I will shoot you pm. Thanks again.

Sorry if my answer was dissappointing. I guide there every year at Southern Redbone Days; Typically I bring back a single coon scored or a dead cast, once I brought back a second place. In 2010 I had 2 dead casts and did not guide Saturday because I felt it unfair to the hunters who would rather get a guide on private land with buckets. Theres some great hunting in that area, but the gamelands themselves get hunted hard.

That is about what I figured. I knew some guys that used to hunt up around range road on some private property and they said it was thick with coons. I could not help but notice this game land connected with a little piece of range road and thought maybe it all was covered up with coons.

Chris is right about falls hunting. It's a lot of walking for one coon or sometimes more but lots of area for the dogs to run. Where do you live? I my be able to gey you hooked up with people closer to you to hunt with.
