help with my first litter
I have been coon huntin for a while now, but just had my first litter of redbone pups. Monday they turned 2 weeks old. I have heard that I can now start them on puppy chow soaked in milk. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Don't feed Puppy Chow, there is better feed out there.
How big is your litter? If it's an average size litter (6 to 9 pups) I would wait until they're between three to four weeks to start introducing food. If it's a big litter you'll have to judge by how the mother acts and the puppies are doing. If the pups are crying a lot, and the mother isn't nursing them as much you have to help out. I use all species milk replacer reconstituted with warm water and mixed with baby rice cereal to start. Make a gruel with that and offer it to the pups in a low sided pan. If they're hungry they will eat it. Do that for a few days (I usually use up two boxes of cereal during this time). Then I start adding puppy kibble soaked in the milk replacer. I gradually reduce the milk replacer until they are on kibble alone.
Also, I recommend as they get older to use about three seperate pans to feed them in. That way they don't become "competitive gobblers" and stay "normal" eaters.

2 weeks is a little young I would wait another week or so. Their digestive systems aren't quite ready yet. Plus mamas milk is best for them right now.
And when u do start grind the feed up really fine and use just a little warm water to soak until its thick then add warm goats milk in to make it more pasty. Do not use regular people milk it will make them sick.
It won't take much first few times. As they get bigger u can start not grinding so fine and soaking as long so i t leaves chunks and that way it starts getting chunky as their teeth start coming in and they will be able eat by the timme they are 6 weeks old and ready to go to new homes shortly after that.
Also if they are 2 weeks old if no one has told u to go ahead and get some nemex 2 and worm the puppies and mama. Nemex is safe for females with puppies. We worm ours weekly until they are 12 weeks old then every 2 weeks till 16 weeks then once a month.

Thank you, she had 7 but we lost one. She doesn't seem to be nursing quite as much, but the pups look good. I'm just new to the whole breeding part.
By the way, my bluetick has some uthchman in him, He is one hell of a COON DOG!

I always start them on food as soon as thier eyes open. Put the puppy food in the blender and make powder out of it then soak it with hot water. Leave set for and hour or so then lossen up with milk as needed. You may have to get some on your finger and let them taste it. After a couple feedings make sure you get your fingers out of the way. I've always used puppy chow with great results but I'm sure there is higher quality feeds if you can afford that. Pick up a bottle of Nemex II and a syringe without a needle and start worming them per instructions once a week. I've always weaned mine a five weeks and have been accused of feeding them milk replacer for calfs, never have used it on pups in my life. Worming is the most important part. Good luck . Your female will appreciate you for this.
I've haven't seen one get sick on regular milk yet but that's me, you use your own judgement. I've never lost a pup that wasn't dead at birth already. Worms is your biggest killer of pups except for parvo.
down and out
Thank ya sir, I don't own the Dam or the pups. I just have the best kennels for the job. In return for taking care of her and the pups I get a male pup outta the deal. Sire is a "Grch Grnitech". Anyway I apreciate your advice. It all helps. Holler if yall ever need me
