Anyone ever try making coon den boxes ??
I have a 80 acre set of woods that I have been trying to stock with coon with out much success. It has a nice little swamp in the middle and a vegtable farm surrounds it. It was timbered years ago and only has a few natural dens left on it. Plenty of oaks and lots of big wood just no significant amount of den trees. Coons are there but most have holes int the ground. I was wondering if anyone has ever made any Den Boxes and hung them up? does it work? I think it might work if I put feeders under the den boxes. I just was hoping someone had some experience with something like this.
Thanks for any advice, Jimmy J.
had a friend try it down in texas......all he got was flyin squirrells......thus became the start of makin some extra cash sellin them 10 bucks a pop....

ground coon
if your woods is full of ground{holes}coon.then its gonna take a while for any climb.
born in a hole, live in a hole is all they know.
the more logging thats gets done, the more ground coon there is gonna be.
been in alot if woods here that are ruined for coon hunting from logging.TONS of tops all over.big trees gone.but.....deer hunters love it;allows light in,briars grow up.tops to lay under.

i brought an old thread entitled den boxes back up for ya.
We built some about 12-13 years ago in conjunction with the USFS. They are the same size as the duck boxes put out by the DNR.
We put up 10 of them and checked them for several years. Out of the 10, seven had coons raising in them within a year. One had an owl take up residence and the other two eventually wound up with coons in them after two years.

Was the boxes you built under a USFS program of sorts? Thanks

Not really. We just talked with the local USFS biologist and he had the boxes built . He helped us to install and monitor them.
