Who uses a tow strap to pull people stuck?
I can't seem to get this article to copy/paste but what it is about is a local guy went to pull out a car with his 4x4 truck useing a towstrap and the strap came loose, the hook flew back thru the window and hit him in the back of the head killing him stone dead with his 4 year old daughter sitting on the seat next to him.

MEXICO, Ind. – Authorities in northern Indiana say a driver trying to help a stuck motorist was killed when a tow strap came loose, sending its metal end through his pickup truck’s rear window and hitting him in the head.
The Miami County Sheriff’s Department said 46-year-old Glenn Music stopped to help a driver whose vehicle had slid into a ditch along a rural road near the town of Mexico as several inches of snow fell in the area Tuesday night.
WWKI-FM of Kokomo reported that Music was using the tow strap to pull out the vehicle when he was fatally struck with his 4-year-old daughter with him inside the truck.
Music was pronounced dead at the scene but his daughter wasn’t physically injured. Authorities didn’t immediately release where he lived.
it happend at the army depot in mcalester ok... if they catch you doing it there anymore your barred from the base for life not to mention the fine they issue
They are dangerous. I use one it just has loops, no hooks they break or come loose and I've seen one go through the grill, radiator, fan, and lots of damage to the engine. With the loops they are pretty safe even if the break or come loose don't do damage.

sad news we always lay some type of heavy jacket or material on the cable or whatever were pulling with... it will act.. slow the speed down a good bit if it pops.watched some old timers do it for years with winch cables and seen a few pop and when they did they didnt travel far of course he was use a old firefighter jacket.that weights a good bit itself

Having hooks on both ends of a strap makes it very dangerous. The better one have the loops and are made of heavy gauge material. They also cost more.
Most folks would go a lifetime and never see it happen but anyone who is likely to stop and help as a good samaritan or is in a job where you would do that needs to review the safe way to use a strap to tug someone out. Up here stopping to help in bad weather is a way of life, not exactly like karma but what goes around can come around in a blizzard.
When we skid logs when wood cutting using log chains we also rig the hook low on the log and at the hitch point so if the chain busts the energy goes low instead of up. Tow straps would never last so log chain is what you end up using. Hooking the chain on the top of the log or rigging it so it rolls to the top leaves it ready to pop right at you. Still there are risks but we do what we can to lower the level.

Jim,
When I was 18-20 all my friends got in the shop and immediately bought new trucks. They used to always have pulling contest. You think a tow rope with a hook causes damage ... ya should seen what a chain can do.
Yes, they all can be dangerous.
