getting back into hunting!

well hello my name is david and im getting back into hunting i was never in to deep in it when i was young my cousin use to get dogs nobdoy wanted or could sale cause they would run something other than a coon sometimes. we were young with no money to buy a dog but we could take good of them. so i havent been in the woods for over 10 years and just bought my first reg: bluetick coon hound and he is 7 months and thats a little older than what i wanted but he cost 250 and his sire and dam where never hunted or train both grandparents and on are titled. he is active like to play with toys so i order some some scent and tring to trap him a coon. but what i would like to know is this age a little to high for some of you hunters. i havent did anything with him other than work on his commands first cause they never spent any time with him so he doesnt know anything what so ever other than lead lmao. but he is respond some what tothe command and he does seem willing to learn which is huge in my book. i know we have a long and hard road in head of us and thats fine success doesnt come over night and it wouldnt mean anything if it was easy. so i welcome all opinions or comment. promise there will not be any feelings hurt over this way. so how about lets get this a rolling.

lol i will throw my 2 cents at yeah and thats about all its worth if i was you i would get a caged coon and mess with him on that see how reacts then id turn it loose with out him knowing it come back get the dog and cut him loose were you turned the coon loose after waiting 10 mins or so see how he dose other than that you can drive back roads and wait for one to cross in front of you then wait 10 mins and cut him besides this id put him in the woods every chance you get if its in him it will come out hes still young but 7to 10 months is prime starting age imo

I know alot of people have different ideas of what to do but here is what I do.

Drag out a dead coon and see if the dog will track it. Leave the coon on the ground at the end of the track. If the dog tracks and finds it let the dog play with it a bit, hoot holler and let him know how great he did. Take up the coon BEFORE the dog gets bored or seems like he is done.

I would do that once a week for 3 weeks then if everything is going good hang the dead coon at the end of the track. Once the dogs gets to treeing pretty good trap a coon and let it loose. Go get the dog and turn him loose close to where you turned the coon loose.

Try doing all of this at night. Then start taking the dog to the timber and see what happens.

thanks to both of you!!!!! i like both ideas and david your is worth more than 2 cents i promise you cause i hada idea kinda close to yours. i repeat kinda lol, but i like. kris i like your idea as well and i love the idea of driving the back roads and waiting for one to cross never thought of that. i hope to have him in the woods by jan: or feb: depends on how he goes. got my work cut out. thanks again..

i have to go with what was stated above, 7 months old is a great age to start working them. some dont even bother till there a year old. we start from 6 months working them on a hide and then a cage coon and then hunting them with a well trained older dog.To make The best hounds though is to hunt them by themselfs.

thanks jarrod for your info all is needed and welcome. i like that you start at six months. i started a weight pulling dogs around that age when i wanted to do some pulling. pretty good age i think.. thanks again
