Tattoo kits

I am wondering which is the best tattoo kit for dogs. I have a litter of pups on the way that I am going to DNA the whole litter and I think tattooing them will be the best way to keep up with which pup goes each sample.

So, can you give me some opinions?

any livestock tattoo pliers will work. i have used bass equipment ones for a long time but there are others out there they are nice also.. i would stay away from the tatoo pen(gun) it takes to long to tattoo.

I tattoo the UKC registration in the ears of every registered pup that I raise. You can get a good livestock tattoo kit and extra numbers and letters at Tractor Supply or any livestock supply.

I got mine at tractor supply co. I also put the UKC reg. # in the ear....then add it on the papers when u send it in it will be on record. SUGESTION!!! crimp a piece of paper b4 each tattoo as you need to put the # & letters in the pliers in reverse and takes some getting used to it Would like to see this happen with more dogs around (less fraudulent papers)

Where do you give your tattoos? lip, ear, inner thigh? Most of the pliers I have seen are four digits long. If you are tattooing the UKC number does that mean you are tattooing the animal twice in order to get the whole number on the animal? Lastly, any advice you would like to offer as I have been seriously considering this after having a dog stolen. I have also contemplated the micro chip and or freeze branding.

I use the Ketchum tattoo kit - it holds 6 letters/number, but you can get one that holds 8. I've been using it for 30 years, trouble free. I have the 50D.

But yes, even after all this time, I always do a 'test' punch to make sure I've got the numbers in the right order

yes I do tattoo both ears ex: left ear has u123 and the right ear will have the 567. I have heard of some sick-o's cutting a dogs ear off to remove the tattoo... well if it was done young then the tattoo grows in size with the ear and if both ears are done and cut off then I would hope someone would have the good sense to have NOTHING to do with said dog and report it! crimp hard and if you think you may need it use a muzzle for the 2nd ear. I use alcohol to clean the ear then roll ink on then crimp then ink again messy but mine have all taken. Make sure after 3-4 days you start to massage the dogs ear so it is not skittish about ears being messed with.
