keeping fleas off

what is a good method for keeping fleas off of dogs, it seems you can treat the dog with something that last!!!!!

My dad uses some kind of spray...

To spray around our kennel. Not a flea on any of the puppies, it really surprised me when Coon Dawg got his, because I was expecting to turn her belly up and her be covered.

I'll ask him this evening what he used, because it for sure worked!

You can use that Bug B Gone stuff on the grass aound the kennel,it will get the fleas,ticks,ants,and most other insects.Check the label carefully though,i can't remember if it had a pet warning or not.

SOUND KINDA ODD BUT IT REALLY WORKS. POUR HALF A PINT OR A LITTLE MORE TO A 5 GALLONS OF THEIR DRINKING WATER EVRYTIME YOU ADD WATER OR CHANGE WATER ADD THE VINIGAR AGAIN.

I was told that myrtle bushes would run fleas off. We got them in the house some years ago. I tried everything I knew, so I thought " what the heck" I cut a bunch of bushes and put them all over the house. The fleas stayed, the ticks and chiggers moved in and the wife left (for a few hours- she then re-infested)

I got some %50 seven dust that dissolved in water-that did the trick!

I have had the same problem. First in the spring spray around your kennel. Clean all your kennels with a 1 part bleach to 5 parts water. If you have plastic dog house clean them out too. If you don't have plastic houses you might want to invest in them they are easier to keep clean. Plus they don't have places in them where bugs can hide. Anyways, get some cedar shavings and put it in the houses for bedding ( fleas hate cedar). The dogs themselves wash them in a good flea shampoo let them dry fully and them lightly spray them with Avon's origional Skin-So-Soft. For some reason fleas hate that too. For ticks keeping the area around the kennals clean are the best. After a nights hunting keep a good flea and tick spray on hand and spray them when you get back. I personally have had real good results. The plus if your dogs coat is shabby the avon will help make it better.

Use frontline or advantage...... use the plastic cattle tags..... spray malathion on all weeds shrubs trees etc in the area where you keep your dogs..... take everything out of the dog houses and clean thoroughly then use sevin dust and meadow hay in there ...... put hydrated lyme on the ground in and around the kennel. Keep your grass mowed and the weeds in check. Take every thing out of your dog box and clean the heck out of it. Use brand new bedding in there as well. Mix 10% sevin dust with carpet fresh and sprinkle generously on the carpet then after waiting an hour or so vaccuum the heck out of the place, do the same thing a couple times spread over a couple of days. If your dog is sleeping inside on a nice little comfortable bed take the bed and bedding to the dump and get a new one.

I have seen individuals hang the cattle tags in the doorway of the dog house so the dog(s) has it rub on it's back everytime it goes in or out...... after that the doghouse seems to offer a safe refuge for the dog from biting flies too as the flies won't chase the dog in there with the cattle tags hanging in the doorway. Not a good idea for puppies or dogs that like to chew on their dog house.

If you have a flea problem there is a good chance that you also have a tapeworm problem so keep an eye on stools for what appears to be moving little pieces of flattened rice. Keep your kennels as clean as possible as dogs can re-ingest tapeworms after you think you have them under control.

I agree, if you have a flea problem, you may also have a tape worm problem. I have several dogs and I fill up a 55 gallon barrel and put a lindane solution in it to dip my dogs in it. I dip my dogs every 2-3 weeks. I have also a product called Capstar (nitenphyram) that is safe to give puppies and pregnany females. It will kill over 90% of the fleas in a matter of a couple of hour. It is reasonably priced. I use plastic barrels for dog houses and I also spread lots of agriculture lime in the areas I keep my dogs. It kills flea eggs, worm eggs, and also kills most dog odors.
