Breeding Question

About how long is the window of opportunity for successfully breeding a female? I have a 7 year old that I've been waiting on to come in all year, and my fiance' finally noticed that she and her kennelmate seemed to be coming in Friday. I was out of town during the week and couldn't check her myself, so my issue is I don't know exactly when she came in. It could have been anytime between Monday and Friday. Will it be cutting it too close to take her to have her bred this Thursday or Friday? This is my first planned breeding, and I just want to try to have everything go smoothly since the female is getting older!

Average is 11 days from first red show to standing heat. This can fluctuate with each individual, though.
A test is to swab her vulva with a piece of tissue. When it's red, she is not going to be ready. When it turns straw colored, she's ready. That window is normally 3-5 days Sometimes as little as a day and othertimes it can seem to go on forever. She will start acting flirty, needy and a bit silly if she's like most dogs I know. Other females may act upset with her and she may try to mate with other dogs, even females once she's in standing heat.

Good luck. 7 isn't impossible but it's more a gamble - not just on her taking but on her uterine health. If she takes, monitor her labor and delivery closely. If she strains too much or you go an hour or so between pups, it's time for the vet. A torn uterus will spell fatal for a bitch. This can happen at any age but particularly higher risk in older females due to all the seasons she's had, not necessarily the pregnancies.

Also, ask your vet for a tube of gelled calcium to keep on hand just in case she goes into milk fever after they are born. Do NOT supplement with extra calcium before the birth, but do after they are born.

Thanks for the info Janet. I'm going to take another look at her when I get back in town from work this Friday and see how she looks. I believe he may have caught her too late, and hate to make a trip to breed her when she may not take. She's never been bred before, and I was starting to get concerned that she was so late coming in heat this year but it may have been because the female she is kenneled with was late as well. Guess I'll keep my fingers crossed that she will come in heat again in 6-8 months instead of waiting another year!

What I think

Hello there, I believe and stand on this. I bred on the 10-12th day from the first sight of blood. They are producing more eggs at that time, they will walk right into the pen with the stud dog and start flagging him. I have a litter due any day now and she just turn 8. This will be her last litter I will let her have. Much older they can start having serious problems. After she takes a male and you notice she is carrying. Make sure she is up on her yearly shot. Why? Because it makes the pups healther. Plus put her on Pup Chow or some kind of pup food. She will need all that chemicals back into her body, for them pups will draw it out of her. When she goes into labor watch her. If it is a long time between pups time to load her and the other pups up and go to your vet. Also is she has yellow fluid take her to the vet, for she has a dead one she can't birth and it will kill her.

IF YOU HAVE DEPENDABLE MALE CLOSE, LET HIM AND HER TELL YOU WHEN SHE IS READY.

SID WONT FOOL WITH A FEMALE UNLESS SHE IS RIGHT FOR BREEDING.

Also, just to give you a potential heads up, breeding an older female that has never been bred can lead to timing problems as well as other problems.

The last female I breed for her first time was 6, and she lost the litter and had to be spaded.

Yeah, older females sometmes present a lot of problems. If you seriously want a litter from this female, I would take her to the vet have her health evaluated and have her ovaluated. The ovaluation test can tell you to the exact minute when to breed a female. Yeah, and if it's your stud dog I would probably have his sperm count checked as well. You would be surprised at the number of males who have abnormal sperm counts, etc. Just thoughts, hope it helps. Tom

Thanks for the advice everybody. I do want to get at least one litter out of her before something happens to her...if I ONLY get one that will be ok too. She's an extremely healthy dog, so I don't anticipate any problems but I'll have the vet check her out beforehand if it looks like she'll still be ready to breed when I get home.
