New Mexico bear hunt
Me and a couple of my buddies are headed to NM in a few weeks to try our luck in the santa fe national forest. Just curious if anyone out there in hound dog land had any tips or suggestions that we could use to narrow our search for mr. bear. I.e. food sorces, elevations to try, or anything that would make this trip a successful adventure.

stay off the reservations, avoid the santa fe area... a lot of tree huggers live their and will go camping to run interference.
Has anyone from out my way,or had a buddy who ever traveled out to New Mexico dog hunt ? If so how did their trip go?

I go out every year. Always get on bear. Some years the bear are down low in more desert type country and others they are in higher elevations. Last year all the bear we found were higher feeding on yellow jacket nests in the ground and tearing apart stumps to get insects and larva. Some areas have lots of hunters and others there is no one around. Good Luck
RE: ohio bear hunter
Did you find that the bear traveled during the day time or was it mostly at night. Just curious how often you had any rig strikes around mid day.

seriously if you are driving all the way out here, you should try the ruidoso area down south, I have already seen a few good sized ones.
Ruidoso
I did look around and think about going down to unit 34 around weed , and sacramento. I just couldnt get an idea of how many bear were down there running around I thought the population might be a little lower because of the low Quota kill numbers for that zone. I know its roaded better than the area where ive picked out to hunt , I was just a little worried about the temperatures, as well as not being able to find any bear to chase. I guess in hind site the elevation would control the heat. Where in new mexico has the reputation for having the most bear besides the reservations?
