I live in Utah where it isn't legal to run off bait, so therefore, any of us that wants to stay legal runs off the rig or off a track. Personally, I spent years making a pack of rig dogs and they have evolved to hounds that will strike hot or cold lion and bear tracks off the rig. Rigging is the only way to hunt but not the best way to trophy hunt, as baiting gives a guy a leg up on rig hunters.

Rig Hunting

We do both in MIch. But a good rig dog has saved the day, When no bear has visted to the picnic area....

Do you train to strike off the rig by simply putting your young dogs up there with the old dogs? or do you ever stage a crossing, maybe dragging a hide across a road to see if a young dog will strike??

There are a lot of ways guys train rig dogs. I just put them up there and went hunting. Once they figure out they are hunting they start to try and wind a track. Like all hunting the more they do it the better they get. The best dog I had started rigging coon from inside the box. So I made a platform and started putting him up there. This was before I started hunting bear. I started bear hunting soon after this. This dog would stike before any of my other dogs. He was just a natural.

here more guys have gone to running off baits, but I would rather rig . A lot less cold trailing and you can get the younger dog in on the race more often

rigging

Here in western NC we walk these long step mt trails leading dogs to find tracks cause baiting is not allowed and they aint many roads so we lace up the boots and do all foot work.
