TRAPPED...............??????

I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT HERE IN MISSOURI.. IN PAST YRS. A GUY WAS PRETTY SAFE TO JUST KEEP AWAY FROM THE RIVERS , THIS YR. EVERY PLACE YOU CAN POSSIBLY TURN A DOG LOSE IS FULL OF TRAPS..COUNTY ROAD DITCHS , CULVERTS, FENCE ROWS, LOGGING ROADS, DEER CAMPS, HIKEING TRAILS, GOVERMENT LAND ... IF A DOG IS FREE CASTED IT IS GOING TO GET TRAPPED..THE ONLY WAY I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO HUNT IN THE LAST 15 DAYS WAS TO RIG HUNT.....I KNOW WE AS SPORTSMEN HAVE TO GET ALONG AND PRESERVE OUR RIGHTS TO DO SO ,THERE IS A WAY , BUT THE TRAPERS HERE REALLY DONT GIVE A DAM ABOUT HOUND HUNTERS......WE AS HOUND HUNTERS DO NOT STOP TRAPPERS FROM TRAPPING BUT THEY DO STOP US FROM HUNTING HOUNDS WITH THERE ILL RESPONSIBILITYS...IMO.

I'm in MO and I agree with you. I haven't had any hounds caught in a trap but I've never heard of so many who said they are trapping, as I have this year.

I think part of it is that its just a sign of the times where those that want to hunt and trap are crowded into smaller areas. Some guys will tell you they are trapping a ditch to keep you out of it.

had dog caught in fox trap a while back, no tag on it. luckily, no harm done. since i use to trap, i just went down every ditch i wanted to hunt in area and set traps off, and then went on and hunted with no problem.

first of all you guys need to learn more about trapping. most trappers dont want to catch your dog. are good trappers around here use dog proof traps were coon hunters huntand most water trappers traps will not hurt a dog exept beaver traps ,goto local trapper meetings and talk to them and you will learn they are just like you most of the lime

Trappers

I used to trap mostly rats and mink. Really enjoyed it. I am also a deerhunter and coonhunter so I hear all the complaints and see all the fingerpointing. Trappers are sportsmen just like deerhunters, coonhunters, rabbit hunters we all have our rights and all need to follow the laws and regulations. No trapper wants to catch your dog and many have their own dogs and enjoy the outdoors as much as you. There are probably some trappers saying the dang dog hunters are messing up their trapping LOL! I dont want a dog caught in a trap anymore than anyone else.

Wingpatch that is why I follow the dogs thru the woods so I can be on top of what happens or close by. I always figured the guys that cut a dog loose and sat on the tailgate were lazy azz. See we all have varying opinions so best not to knock it till we understand it. We all have our places like I said there are good and bad in all. Be carefull Wing!

i know what you sayin man. my dog got in a trap lets see about a month before season even opens. made for a great first nite. havent went to that spot since.

Posted by brack carr on 01-12-2013 08:52 PM:

wingpatch the 2 victor will not hurt you or a dog they will sting a bit those traps are mainly for coyote trapping they will have swivels on the chain that stops leg braking.the only traps i worry about are 220 bucket sets . the people that use them in places that people can hunt dogs there need educated. here where i hunt there is trappers every where and i have taken dogs out of traps before and kept hunting them that night because they were ok.
the peole that traping the ditchs and the culverts are mainly muskrat and mink traping(i have trapped for 30yr or so and never caught a dog in them places ever). i trapped for one week these year and made enough money to pay all of my enteries fees all year and money left over and yes i hunt hard

When rats are selling for $11 and up, mink 20 n up trappers are coming out of the woodwork, remember when coon were 40 and up everyone thought they needed a coondog or a big spotlight. jmho

i was running on the quantico marine base one late evening and hear a dog squalling. i found it about 20 ft off the paved road. i tried to get it out but he was so histerical i couldn't get to him. i found his owner as i was running home. that had to hurt. as for keeping up with your dogs, forget about it. there's not a man alive that keep up with dogs in this mess and if you hear them in trouble it might take you a while to get to them.
it seems a trapper could put a sign up saying a area is being trapped.

Oh....and I forgot one thing. That issue about turning them loose from the tailgate....when my dog is in there 3/4 of a mile and there's no road around...that's a mile and a half hike...on one drop. Can't be lazy running a hound like that.

I trap and hunt! All of you guys bitching and moaning about traps are a bunch of whinners. The only trap that is gonna hurt your dog is a 220 conibear or a snare with a kill spring on it. I was hunting earlier this fall and the dogs got treed on a den on the shore of a public lake. When I got to the tree I noticed my Sandy dog was sitting down treeing nit standing on the wood like normal, I thought that is odd, until I joticed her paw was caught in a #2 coilspring. she never missed a beat treeing, and I bent down and let her loose and she was right back to jormal standing on the wood. My young male was on the other side of the tree with his back leg caught in a trap as well. He was treeing and then every so often he would turn and lick his foot. I let him out and hunted the rest of the night. No big deal. Another time I had a coyote set a half mile out behind the house, I only checked that set every two days ( per SD. regulations) well one night my beagle wasn't around at feeding time. I just figured she was out chasing bunniesin the grove, next night I found her in my coyote set, which by the way was a big #2 bridger fourcoiled coyote slaying piece of iron, cut her loose and she limped for two days and was all better. No big deal. Nothing out there is gonna hurt your dog except a 220 conibear or a kill spring snare. Get along and knock off the whinning, we need to band together as sportsman, and furharvesters, or pretty soon all of this tradition is gonna disappear.

Post signs

If every trapper put up a sign in areas they trapped you would have to get rid of your hounds you wouldnt have any where to hunt my friend. Not to mention every one of there traps would be stolen if they put up signs

If your dog ever gets in a leghold use your feet to get it out

I have seen eighty year old men set a number #5 double long spring beaver trap without any trouble at all. Heck my wife traps with me, while I am making a set she will set the trap and hand me supplies, I can't believe a bunch of grown men are whinning about not being able to get get a dogs paw out of a trap. But I guess the strength needed to set a trap won't come from sitting around typing on a keyboard.

Traps

Welcome toJackson County Iowa. You learn to live with it and respect thier rights. Season hasnt become as important to me as a nice spring night.

Up here when the snow flies they usually get pulled. Hard to train a young one then but it is what it is.

I try to keep a good relationship with the trappers in my area and try to avoid the areas when they are trapping. They have as much, or more in some cases right as me to be in the area. I try to persuade them to stick to foot holds or anti locking snares. If my dog gets a toe broke, well I may not be happy, but I can live with it. However I make it clear if he gets killed in a conibear, there will be swift and dangerous retiliation! I really hate that Indiana law allows 220's to be set on dry ground and personally feel any trapper who sets them in a location that could catch a dog is very irresponsible.

my opinion

no sport in trappin but money yes i hunt dogs and trap and if u do well it makes up for the low work hours this time year and be honest trapper if u no people runnin dogs that area yes i warn them but a big downfall that when u warn coonhunters of ur traps for some reason i have several traps a year stolen and for dog proof traps they 16 dollars a piece and small connibear 5 dollars apiece so a big set back like i said i run dogs and trap i no both sides cant we just get along and keep in mind many people outta work cause our goverment so y the trapper num up this year people have to live
