Salem Illinois Vet. Threatens Coonhunters

We went coonhunting tonite the hounds got on a long track they went across a local veterniarians property while we was shinnin the tree i saw a light come to us and it was the vet. he was packin a fiberglass axe handle and started threating us just because our dogs was on his ground the bad part was the tree they treed in wasnt on his ground it was just outside his property line he started shackin the axe handle in our friends face threating him all over because of the deer he thought we would run them out what gets me is he works with animals everyday and works with the public and yet he has to show his butt it wasnt like we was tearin up his property or anything we were just retrieving our dogs the other bad part is we had a 12 yr old boy with us while this was all goin on

Print off this pamphlet and give it to him.

Myself, I would probably be hard pressed not to lecture him about how respect is a two way street.

Someone should have taken the kid to the truck.
And someone should have taken that axe handle and shoved it up his butt and made a popsicle out of him !!!!!!

Mike is the vet on the south end of town. He is my Vet. I will be sure to question him on this. I am not defending him but he and his wife has helped me out many times. With my hounds. You would think he would know better than to do this kinda thing.

Posted by john guinn on 12-18-2008 11:31 PM:

i just couldnt believe he did somethin like that since he makes alivin helpin hounds it would have been different if he had just commin out there and told us to leave but to come down with a axe handle and then to shake it in someones face and cusin and raisin his voice with a 12 yr old boy there he should have used alittle sense

I am with you John. I will drill him about it. If his answer dont suit me I will find another vet. I always make it a point if I see someone on my property to go out and check it out. Not to run em off just to see who it is. Sounds like he went way over the line. Have you guys had previous encounters?

keith this was the first time we had ever had a run into with him i have never had anyone come in on me coonhuntin all the yrs i have been doin it

guys you are forgetting one thing its the Vets ground he is the OWNER he is entitled to act any way he wants, do i approve of his actions well, NO, but you have to think you were trespassing and whats that teaching a 12 yo, i know ive done it to go get my dogs i also know the chances im taking when i do it and im not going to get on here and bitch about it if someone chewed my ass, now if he was one of those guys that owned a one acre lot on a 1 mi section it would be different

Posted by HalfmoonHounds on 12-21-2008 12:59 PM:

I think the threat with the axe handle was the concern. Of course I wasn't there, but if they were polite and apologized to him and explained they were getting the dogs then he went overboard in my opinion. Now of course if they were obnoxious about it, then different story. What time was it, was there a light on? I have walked to a few front doors to ask permission to get my dog not knowing what to expect, (i.e. big dog, gun barrel). Some have been pissy, but all of them told me just hurry up and get the dog.

I think as hunters and responsible adults we need to respect other peoples property and ask permission if at all possible. My buddy got us on some farms recently, and he went around to all the ajoining properties on a Saturday afternoon and asked if it would be okay to retreive dogs if they made it off Farmer So-So's property treeing a coon. They all said sure, thanks for asking, and by the way if they have one treed shoot it and take it with you.
So, we came up with a technique, " Introduce, Ask, Invite", we actually aquired more places to hunt and some potential hunting buddies.

James

my thinking also.....not taking up for the vet, but you were TRESPASSING! plain and simple, but you seem to act like that is irrelevent.

i agree with the other guys. in IL you can't be charged with your dogs running on someone else's property as long as you don't send them over, but you also can't go onto that property to get them weithout permission from the landowner. I understand that the vet went over the line, but he was probably a little intimidated by a bunch of guys with guns and had to try to come across as tough. I've had the best success talking to non-hunting farmers and asking them if I can coonhunt on them. Their answer is usually, "Heck yeah, and kill every one of those SOBs."
I also deer hunt with my brother and we always get in arguments about the impact of coon hunting on deer hunting. He swears my dogs will chase every deer into the nextcounty. The truth is, if you have a dog that chases deer everyone knows the deer runs a big circle and comes right back where it started. That is its home turf and it doesn't want to leave.

Didn't he say they were not on the vets property when he came down? I guess he saw them as they were crossing him or what ever. Me personally, I would not listen to a butt chewin if I wasn't on his property. That is over the line or fence you might say. Did you guys walk across his farm or drive down the road and go in where they were treed?

Posted by Keith Hodge on 12-21-2008 02:43 PM:

Plott power ,

This is like me being a gun salesman and treatening bodily harm to the neighbors for all the noise thier making shooting their guns. It dont make good business sense. Fact is you cant legally shake an axe handle at someone either. Not to mention the John said he wasnt on the guys property. If the vet would get shot because John felt threaten I belive the vet couldnt really argue all he would have to say is he feared for his life. Even if you own the property it doesnt give you the right to act ignorant.

I just dont understand when it became such a big deal for someone to go get a hound that has wondered. Even if you dont like them on your property you can easily state that without getting stupid. There is no need for hollerin and shouting.

Posted by Randy Tallon on 12-21-2008 02:53 PM:

Read it again, boys. The dog's trespassed through. The tree was on the neighboring property and nowhere did I read that John trespassed.... To ensure that the vet didn't take the next step I would "just happen" to shine my light on the Glock on my belt and apologize like crazy.(really!!!) I have talked to the locals to see if the individual is a habitual police caller/crazy. If not I take a ride and walk up on the front porch to re-introduce myself and apologize again. It has actually gotten me on property that for most is forbidden land. One or two have actually told me where to park. Sure, there are some that want no part of anyone on there property. Ten years ago there probably would have been an incident and people would have been driving by the next day and say, "I've never seen anyone use a good axe handle on a scarecrow...." In my older age (Don't say it, Jerry) I have learned that discretion is the better part of valor....
