Den boxes (pics)
Putting up boxes is a good way to use up scrap lumber.Although I have alot of den trees on my place,I'm always building something which leaves me with a bunch of scrap. I try not to waste anything.
Hope you enjoy!
what are your measurements, looks like a good way to keep coon in a timbered area where all of the den's have been destroyed? thanks.

I always wondered how this would work. Thought about it along time ago but never built anything. How many boxes do you have out, and how many have coon living in them?? Great pic

What is the measurements on the opening? Any closeup pictures?
Very interesting. Nice pics!
I've often thought about building a few of these.
I'd like to see some more pics as well.
I always thought building den boxes and feeders might be a neat idea for a fundraiser for clubs. Something that could be used in youth programs as well. Get some donated material and plan a day with local youth hunters building them and then sell them from the club and put the proceeds back to the youth.
Fester,
Great idea !!! Is the top open ,or is there a top and an entry hole ? If a hole how big is it ?? The timber company has left me with nothing but pine trees I need some of these to hang in the few dead hardwoods they left behind!!! I've been building feeders and putting out for the last few months ..Get some nest boxes then trap and relocate some coon and I'll be in business again !!! Thanks,Dave

The openings are about 4in tall and 8-12in wide, facing south.
Here's one of my feeders, its about 8ft off the ground(to keep the cattle and deer out). They hold about 3-4 hundred lbs of feed and have a place for a trap.
Excellent photos, thanks!!

Thats awesome. I would have to shoot some crows I think if I put it at my house. Seems that unless its spoiled corn, the crows eat as much as the coons...although I work squir dogs too, so this would help with them too. Thanks for the ideas...1 more thing...how do you get those pics of the coons without getting eaten up??lol

good pictures and a good idea. we have a lot of den trees here but they're too small for coons. they're great for squirrels. i've been wanting to put some up too. i've got one built from scrap 2" treated lumber. it's heavy too but it'll last a long time.

Here is how you do it. Put up den boxes all over you land with stairs going up to them then take a cast in hunting and every one can walk up the steps and see the coon! + + + + + I better start saving my $$$$$ for land1 LOL
Some thoughts
I've hunted in some areas where it seems about every 3rd tree is a den tree. Might not always see one on the outside, but can come back time after time and run a track and make a tree.
I've also hunted in areas that were clear cut and there wasn't a tree left standing that was big enough to pick your teeth with. In areas like that it seems like the only coon tracks you can find are the ones that are fossilized in stone.
It took Mother Nature more than a lifetime to build this den.
My boy and me built a couple of these in an afternoon.
Both hold coons.

New pics
This afternoon my boy and me checked a couple of our boxes that are easy to get at. It was nice to see they were occupied. A great way to spend an afternnoon with a kid. We have taken some really nice coon this year, however, I have treed more coon and taken less than any time I can remember. It seems as time goes by, I become less and less of a killer each year. Just spending time with him and the dogs treeing a bunch of coons is reward enough. He agrees.
Fester, I admire a man like you !!
