Why is it

Everyone has a top hound, so why is it so hard to find one?
You can hunt this country from coast to coast and all points inbetween and be lucky to see a handful of top shelf hounds.
Many are they that claim to have one . Very few do.

Wish I had one. Or knew where one was.

Depends. On what you are looking for Elvis. Everybody has different definitions of what a top hound is. I only had one in my lifetime that I owned that I felt like I could compete with anybody. They are scarce as hens teeth.

Elvis

I’m like tar in that I’ve only had a couple in a lifetime and I’ve looked hard spent much but of course my problem is I’m a blue dog man.

Elvis, maybe they think that you are looking to buy one. No one wants to sell their good dog so they show you their not so good one. Have you ever heard the song, "looking for love in all the wrong places"?

Why is it?

I really get a kick out of those that presume to speak as an judge of top quality coondogs, when they have not hunted with most of the dogs , only a small percentage. How does one draw these conclusions? There are many pleasure hunters that never enter a hunt, so how can one make these statements about the quality of dogs in general? As a wise man once said, " don't measure my corn in your bushel"! Opinions are just that an opinion, one should NEVER confuse an opinion with a fact. If one would really like to ascertain the quality of our coondogs, then go hunt with as many different dogs as you can in your area or across the country. Don't generalize based on limited exposure, you may just be surprised to see some really good dogs that never make a competition hunt. Dave

Depends on what you call a coon dog I reckon. I’m like you I have yet to see one myself. I’ve seen some very close and some nice ones but in 5 yrs of running the roads I’ve not seen one that really stood out night after night recut after re cut

Dogs

Yep, it depends on who's judging the dog, my junk may just be someone else's dig of a lifetime, or my best might be junk to someone else. Who is right or wrong? I learned many years ago that it all depends on what you like, it's not about what someone else likes. It's a rare thing when something is just so good that everyone likes it. One better be concerned more about what suits them, if anything, than what someone else likes. How many men could measure up to a standard that some want to measure a dog by? Truth is that when we find a dog with more plus points than bad and can be bought, we have done something! Nothing wrong with wanting a perfect dog, other than being disappointed when you never find one. Lol. Dave

Yeah I done gave up on my dream dog cause it does not exist so I just hunt what I’ve got. Try to make the best out of what I got to work with.

Dogs

Let me clarify myself, first of all I highly respect Elvis and his opinion about a dog, he has seen some good ones! I just don't think any of us have hunted with or have first hand knowledge of the majority of dogs in the hunting community to make a blanket statement about all these dogs. Would some of these dogs be a top coonhound, you can bet on it. Top coondogs are rarely offered for sale and not highly known outside their hunting community. Better still, a Top dog in one part of the country might not make the grade in another part of the country. Folks like different styles, there are just too many variables and opinions to accurately say what's not and what does exist. I do share his opinion that top coondogs are rare and not as common as some folks think. They do exist. Dave

I like your style and honesty, nothing wrong with having high standards in anything. You are the kind of guy that I would buy a dog from, you know what a good dog is and you dang sure tell it like it is, good or bad. I like that in a man. Dave

Ive hunted with 1000s of dogs and seen maybe 20 Id call total package top of the line real live coon dogs. Ive owned probably 70 dogs in my life that could tree a coon and have had 1 or 2 Id call a top hound. Been with a 100 nice dogs that would suit most men on most nights but not a top hound in my eyes. Some guys have owned 50 dogs and in their eyes they all were top dogs.

Not many will buy a dog from me because I hardly ever say anything good about NONE of them. The places I hunt are pounded and it’s hard for a seasoned dog to tree a coon so most my nights ain’t real pretty!! Lol

I much prefer the no bull crap in describing a dog, I can ask the questions that I want and make up my mind. Yes, you are one that I would definitely buy a dog from if it was something I wanted. You would at least give me an honest and educated answer, not some sales pitch. Lol. Dave
