Having your dog hit on the road
Luckily hasn't happened to me, but what has the process afterwards been like for you? I'm assuming you're liable for all the vehicular damage. Has anyone been sued?
dog
I have had friends dogs hit and I believe there home owners covered it but that was twenty years ago. My own experience was a well started female that was killed and I really let the.man have it for speeding and the chance of hitting a deer or worse yet a person to the point he start crying. He offered to pay for the dog but then I felt a little bad about it. Told him that money couldn't replace her. He did buy me a new tracking collar that was smashed thou.
In some states you would be responsible for the damages but in most cases the driver doesn't even stop.

I had a nt ch get hit on a dead end rd. Tried to stop him bye waving him down he wouldn't stop but when the rock busted out his back glass he did.He said your going to pay for my window and I said we'll your going to pay for my vet bill . And he said I didn't hit your dog .and I said I didn't bust your window . So I took my dog to the vet they had to put a pin n her leg doing well now !!!!!

One of the best young dogs I've ever owned was hit on the road... By me!!! I was sick. It was before Garmins came out. I was trying to catch up to her because she had blown out of the woods I was hunting. When I started driving she was probably 250-300 yards away from the road running parallel. By the time I got down the road she had cut back towards the road... I would have never thought that she covered that much ground. I was only going about 15 miles an hour when she popped up outta the ditch and in between the passenger side tires. The rear passenger side tire ran her over. Crushed her pelvis, lacerated something in her belly and destroyed her left leg. Had her leg amputated and emergency surgery to stop the bleeding. She lived but she never went hunting again. Made her my house dog. She would run tracks all day long and tree for hours during the day but absolutely would not go hunting at night. She would hide under the truck... Which struck me as odd. Lol

Unless you can prove the dog was kept up and in a good enclosure .. and getting out and hit was an accident ... you gotta pay for whatever damages are done ... same as with your cow or horse getting out.
I will honk or slow down for a dog ... but I won't swerve , Iv'e hit a few but I won't train myself to swerve into a tree or something and kill myself or my wife trying to dodge a dog .
I have gotten my wife into that habit pretty well too , but if she ever swerves and wrecks to miss someone's dog that is chasing cars or just prowling the streets ... It will be bad .

Yeah , it's scary ... I used to haul hay at night after my day job .. come home at 3 or 4 in the morning when all the varmints are feeling frisky .... I topped a hill and when I crested and my headlights came back down to the road I was in a herd of Angus and had one on my hood and rolled up into my windshield.
The older folks that owned em' actually first asked me if the cow was alright and would I call their farmer's insurance , lol ... talked about mixed emotions.
I've hit several deer like that too .. I quit hauling hay at night , it was getting too expensive .... the last Buck I hit crashed into that same truck and ruined the core support and hood I'd just put on .

My dog was hit & killed during the ukc zones a few years ago. The person didn't even stop. They Seen our lights and figured he was the one in trouble. It really sucked, made me wanna quit hunting for awhile but I didn't. Now I'm super anal about hunting around roads.

In Va you are liable if an animal gets hit by a vehicle and causes damage.
I just went through it. However it has turned out ok. My dog was hit but the girl stopped and called me to let me know. She was more tore up about it then I was and I was pretty bad. After three days at ER vet he had two fractures in his jaw but other than that was ok. She had seen him in the edge of the woods so had slowed way down.
Was very fortunate that it did not get real bad. Luckily her truck was alright but I am still out my dc40. But in time it can be replaced.

My Rambo got hit late night and they never stopped. Hip dislocated and jaw broken along with scrapes ,broken nails ect. After 9 weeks of laying around with his jaw wired up I was able to ease him back to hunting. I never want to see my dog treed in the middle of a road on the Garmin again.

I have to admit I probably scarred a teenager years ago that hit and killed one of my dogs. He stopped to apologize. He said he was running late to pick up his girl friend. The dog was trying to breath even though his skull was completely crushed. I wasn't thinking, and yelled for my wife to bring the gun. I wanted to put the dog out of its misery ... like i said i wasn't thinking clear.
The poor teenager turned as white as a ghost ran to his car and threw gravel and squealed his tires out of there. My wife came up and said i think he thought you were going to shoot him. Honestly, I never thought about how he may interpreted what i said until my wife pointed it out.

If I hit your hound, I would not stop either. I would hate it, I would do everything I could to avoid it, but what would be the point in stopping? The highway is for cars, not dogs. If you are irresponsible enough to let your dog wander or track in the highway, you have only yourself to blame.
Why does everyone whine about someone not stopping? If your dog is struck and killed, there is nothing stopping can do except give irrational dog owners such as this an opportunity to assault you or start legal action against you they will never win!
I like how everyone says they were speeding or they did not even stop, like normal rational people are riding around just looking to mow someones dog down!
I may be on a different side of the fence about stopping, but the attitudes on this thread indicate stopping would be taking a big chance!

Accident happen, fast cars, cell phones, texting, these things happen. Nothing can be done to prevent it. It's dark visability low, dogs may or may not have lighted or reflective collars but it will make your blood boil when some puke leaves the blacktop or gravel road trying to purposely hit any animal just for the thrill or bragging rights with there friends.
