-- What would you rather have in a young pup? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928297683)

What would you rather have in a young pup?

Would you rather have a pup that started out as a strong track dog but weak on the tree or a strong tree dog that was weak at tracking? Which pup will most likely make the best coondog in the long run? Obviously, We would all like to have both but of those two choices, which would you rather start with. What are your thoughts?

Simple!!

No tree, no glory!! They have to finish the track at a tree to be a winner!! All blues will learn to run a track, just some are better at it is all!!

I guess I must be different, I would rather have a pup with brains enough to track a coon rather than tree just because its breeding says treeing is what its supposed to do. My Misty pup refuses to tree unless she tracks the coon to the tree, don't matter if the tree has the coon in it or not, if she don't smell it there she don't tree. IMO the biggest issue with hounds of any breed today is too much tree power bred into them. We all love a belly rubbing 120 bpm tree dog but if the dog can't track them to the tree then what good is that 120 bpm?

This is the way I feel about the subject but I know it is not the popular opinion.

I'd rather them be more tree minded as a young dog. I can take some tree out, I can't put any in.

ALL dogs are capable of trailing scent.

track

If they can't track treeing going to give them a head ache if it empty to many times I like to have both but it not always there. Best if they show interest in tree and track awesome it makes me smile when coon start raining out he tree comes!

You guys that want the track power and feel that a dog has to run a track to the tree my question to you is: if the coon are not moving, no tracks and the coon are laid up how does a track dog get treed?.........Tim

yep.....a young dog that wants to tree something is likely to be something that you will enjoy taking to the timber and working with......one that wants to run track with little natural tree blood will drive ya nuts

Would have to agree, most can track and will get better with time But I do like a hound that can move out swing and drift a bad track..

pup

To me is under 1 year old. layup ability comes with age and experience he asked in pup. I have found a track driving young dog more times becomes more reliable at have the meat later as a older dog not saying treeing isn't important at all I like a pup to show interested in tree but I work at tracking first and let the tree come natural have never had problems with this.Tracking is the reason I hunt blue ticks TRACK!!! l want to be able to go anytime anywhere and not have to make excuses the reason why my dog doesn't now what the other are doing or not getting any barks. Its to hot,to much snow,to dry,to wet so on I think its a down fall of a tree dog breed to breed for tree and not track!

my opinion

Personally I would rather have a strong tree dog and work with it on the track.

Thanks for sharing your opinions on this subject.

mad dog, I read on a different post once about you saying that the area that you live in should determine what kind of hound you should have. I agree with you 100 percent. I live in a area of West Virginia that is rugged and has a very thin coon population. Nothing upsets me more in a hound than climbing these hills of West Virginia to a hound that slick trees more than not. That is why I place more importance on tracking ability as a pup than tree.

Posted by Randy Howard on 01-28-2013 09:53 PM:

True, most of the time a good track dog when trees will likely have the meat. So it's anyone guess what should come first, but i do like to see a pup show interest in a tree and when tracks be able to tighten up swing and drift and not stand on its head much, but they have to learn how to walk before they can run, then we'll see what they are made of LOL.

I'm looking for young dogs that will get treed. Three best dogs I have trained would slick tree a lot as young dogs and then kept getting more and more accurate as their tracking ability improved.

that to me is the correct answer and is the same as my experiences. a young dog that has the treeing instinct and BRAINS will get more accurate with time in the woods. with me they are more likely to get the time in the woods if they are treeing vs. running track most of the time.

Let me be very clear. I am not talking about a cold nose stand on their head, trail all night type of hound. I'm talking about a hound with very good tracking ability that can move most any kind of track well and get it treed with a coon in the tree. A pup that shows me above average tracking ability gets me excited about my chances to tree coon regularly here in West Virginia.

What do I want in a young pup? BRAINS to put track and tree together and make it happen.
I want a balance of track and tree. When everybody quits breeding for extremes and breed for balance between traits we will see better coon dogs in the long run

Great Post!

Gary, Lol! I kinda figured your post would open this type of discussion. So I guess I'll put in my two cents ( not worth much) Whatever a pup does track, tree, cook, clean. Whatever. I want natural, I'm pretty hard on my dogs, and I want them to listen to me, and I don't want to have to work them over to do it. So as James McClary told me, I want what's between the ears.

i want mine to track.... if they cant track they have no need to tree.... as for coon laying up they may or may not tree those but thats not the case more often than not

this is just the opposite of what i have found.... a pup treeing and missing a majority of the time has never been accurate for me.... a pup should be the most accurate as a pup he will ever be... he doesnt know enough to take a chance on a tree like an old dog will sometimes.... he want tree as many coons as an old dog but when he does tree he should start off very very accurate if not he want stay here long.... also more reason i like track dogs first and tree dogs second

Hello Scott, it is nice to hear from you. I read your post on Thunder. I hope you have good luck with him in the upcoming hunts. Those are some nice pics of him. They show how well he is put together.
