Question
So my 13 and 16 yr old son wanna start coon hunting I'm in prime time area tons of coons in ohio......my question is this they both want a dog so do they wanna buy one young if so how young? Male or female ? Also what's the best pedigree to look for ? I coon hunted with my dad and we ran mnt.curs they want walkers and wanna get into these hunts because there buddy's do it......or do I buy old if so how old any help would be appreciated also anyone has what they are looking for lmk I want it to be in ohio I don't wanna travel far for a dog thanks
You're gonna get lots of replies to this type of question as to what breed and what line is the best. My suggestion would to be to look up the clubs close to you and go to a couple of events, let your kids see the hounds and figure of which breed they tend to like. Then get to know a few guys and try to go pleasure hunting with them a few times.
Good luck on getting into the sport.

I think your pocket book is going to decide some of this for you....I bet the boys already have ideas in their heads too. I agree with getting them around some clubs but maybe they just want to pleasure hunt with their buddies and would like to just play around with hounds. I think it is like a lot of things kids get into...some will stick with it a long time and for some it will be a short lived adventure....so don't put too much $$$$$ into it cause you can do that real fast
No matter what you and those two young ones decide...just remember to enjoy the moment they grow up WAY to quick!!! Also there are ALOT of hounds at the shelters that could very well be great coon dogs (just a thought) Have fun! and good luck! Oh and get them the bloodline magazine .
Dog
If they havent hunted much,my advise would be to find them an older broke dog 5 to 8 years old, that dont need any training. An old dog will teach them a lot ,all they have to do is turn it loose it will know what to do.JMO
Lot of good people and good hounds in Ohio, buy the Best 4 year old hound your bank account will allow cause the coon hunting bug will disappear quick if the first dog is sorry!!

if they really want to do it I know where there is a just 9 year old register treeing walker female that can be bought cheap she does it alone or with company she will still tree a truck load of coon has cast wins in the $kc never been in a ukc hunt is a coon dog as I've hunted with her my kennel is full or I would buy her she's that cheap she is a ways from you but she is worth the trip or even shipping if it was me and at there ages i'd say were getting one and your taking care of her and if its a argument she will be gone in a heart beat if you boys do as I ask and show more interest and keep your grades up next spring we will talk about pups to train with her next summer this female is open on track and is a strong tree dog and belongs to a friend p.m. me for more info
