Just depends on the breeding. I hunted with some big name dogs that I wouldn't own. I judged Randy Scagg's Misty female that won National Grand Nt Ch at Autumn Oaks one year. She was impressive that night. Randy had some good ones. The best one I hunted with was owned by Tim Whitaker in Indiana. Gr Nt Ch Whitakers Smokie. That was a coondog.

There are plenty of good B&Ts, just most are pleasure hunted, (Same goes for ALL BREEDS). Do your homework and try to get a pup that should display the hunt characteristics that you want in a dog. They may be harder to find in breeds other than T&Ws but they are there. There are more T&Ws out there to choose from as there are more T&W pups registered each year than the other breeds combined.

Black and Tans

I have had most kinds for coon dogs except walker and I liked the B&T as well as any I have had. I like the mouth and locate better than other breeds. But I only pleasure hunt and used to meat hunt. Thought about getting another one to train. Mine were slow starters though. That was my only draw back. I like a dog that starts at six months or so.

They are too hard to see in the dark and will scare the fire out of ya at least once a nite.

Yae

I hunt B&T's, always will. Like was said above there are good and bad ones, just like any breed. I like the houndy look and mouth of the B&T. They seem to be a little later starting than some, but that's not a big deal. A lot are good track driving cold nosed hounds.
Just keep your expectations real and have fun. Good luck.
