Independent hounds..breed or trained.

I just got my son a pup that he wants to start comp. hunting with. I have a older hound that I only pleasure hunt. I don't plan on hunting them together a lot maybe to help the pup get started if he needs it. My question is what can you do to make a dog independent or is it all in the breeding.

Thanks
Jeff D

It's mainly in the breeding. Ive had several that will not even go with an older dog from birth. Ive had a couple you couldnt beat away from them. Ive saw them started alone and always hunted alone. Only to be the me tooingest son of gun ever when they finally see other dogs. Best bet is to hope for it to be natural. Good chance of it nowdays to. Seems most pups come with it now more than ever. The man made ones will always revert back sooner or later. Mostly at the very worst time possible lol.

Hunt the pup alone as soon as he starts picking up what he's supposed to do. Let him learn most of it on his own to build his confidence and let him know he can do it with out help some are born independent but I believe if he never learns to depend on another he won't start just my thoughts
