I HAVE A FEMALE WALKER THAT IS A SHOW DOG AND I WAS LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO HELP ME TRAIN HER ON THE BENCH. I THINK SHE WOULD MAKE A GREAT SHOW DOG, HER FIRST TIME OUT SHE WON ALL THREE THINGS FOR GOING TOWARD SHOW CHAMPION. SHE ONLY NEEDS POINTS NOW TO FINISH HER OFF AS A CHAMPION SHOW DOG. IF THE IS ANYONE NEAR FAYETTEVILLE, WEST VIRGINIA THAT COULD HELP ME FINISH HER OUT OR HAVE SOME TIPS FOR ME , I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE THE HELP. GOOD LUCK HUNTING!!!!

Dog on bench....

The main thing is working them on the bench as much as you can. That gets them use to the bench and how to stand on the bench. I have a 7 month old Walker female that I worked on the bench almost every day and she has one two best of shows and only needs 30 points from becoming Show Champion. The hardest thing to do is to get their head from moving, that takes persistance. My walker now will stand still and still has a tendancy of moving her head but with the practice she is getting better about not moving it. If the dog keeps moving their legs, dont get frustrated just move it right back and they will learn where they need to stand. Once you get them on the bench it is a good idea to have someone just to walk around the bench while you have her set up, this gets them use to someone walking around them like a judge would. You will find your own ways to keep your dog set up in the right positiion, you may just have to find that little trick. Keep up the hard work, it will pay off. The main thing is persistance and practice, it will become second nature to you and your hound. Good luck in getting her to Show Champion then to Grand Show.

all of the bench training is well and good and needs to be done. you also need to incorporate some gait training and leading...on a loose lead. with the front end NOT jacked up or the dog leaning sideways. hard to judge a dog like that. most ppl can get a dog to stack on a bench and be a statue. you need to teach the gait as well, as that can be up to 50% of the judging process. good luck

Agreed... It is important to gait a dog correctly so the judge may determine if the dog is to the breed standard. I was just answering on how to get the dog better on the bench itself as it can be a little more difficult. Good luck dewcrew65 and thanks Cynthia as the gaiting part can be over looked when practicing and can ultimately be the determining factor on which dog will win if all dogs in the class are benched to their extent equally.

agrees with Cynthia on ground work/gaiting on bring a major part of judging a dog,,,,,,,,practing gaiting away from the benches to begin with.up and down the road or yard. then take the dig to the bench and practice.Practicing near the bench they associate the two and will always jump or pull toards the bench. if your dog wants to lean away from you, work on gaiting next to a wall or fence. put the dog between you the wall walking either way. they will learn to walk upright and straight. I had several that did that when they were young and it helped tremendously.
