I've seen this at the end of a few dog's names in the magazine, what does is mean?

It means they have passed 3 licensed hunt tests under 3 different non-biased inspectors. The dog has one hour to open, run, tree, and stay treed on at least one coon without comitting two faults such as slick treeing, quiting a track, etc. The dog is hunted by itself.

I think what Todd was trying to say is when a dog reaches HTX it is a coondog that is willing and able to work alone. Almost any dog can be made a NTCH with the right handler and hunting in the right clubs.

It still amazes me all the NTCH dogs that can't tree a coon or hunt by themselfs. I sepctated a NTCH cast one night where a little female walker got hung up on a fence (she would go over it) and started treeing, the other 3 dogs in the cast came back and covered her. If my hound would have done that I would have put a switch to him I couldn't believe it.

Almost any hound can be made into a NTCH with the right handler.
