big problems

hey guys i got a 17 month old walker male he will run and tree his own coon and is not trashey at all but lately he has been being very hard headed and wanting to not come to me when i call and so i put a shock collar on him one night and when he was acting stupid in a feild and not coming to me i bumped him very slightly but he didnt care so i kept trying and had to crank it up all the way and he still would not come so i had to catch him. Well tonight i made my first drop and he would not hunt he wanted to stand by me he knew he had it on agian well he finally went and struck nothing i toned him and hollerd he came in very well. on the next drop he would not hunt at all and i never could get him to leave my side what should i do

Lay off the juice at night!!

Work him in the yard or field in the daytime. Not at night! You are now his safe zone!! He is thinking that as long as he stays buy you no shock that causes the pain! Sounds like a smart hound that's one step ahead of his owner!

I dont think you've ruined your dog, but I do think it's time to STOP HUNTING that dog and let it forget what happened. Use this time to bond, work on loading, take for walks,...at that dog's age I doubt he knows it all so nows the time to take a break and use the off time for other things. In a month or so, NO SOONER, start hunting him again but leave your shocker transmitter in the truck.

The reason I say he's not ruined YET, is most dogs will bounce back. If one instance ruins them, they would have been ruined sooner or latter by a million other things that could happen in the woods.

The temptation to hunt him will be there, but dont do it. He needs to forget. When you start hunting him again, if he goes hunting great, if he doesn't dont say a word to him..dont touch or pet him, just go for a walk...he'll disappear and go hunting when he's ready. If you can walk him into a coon sitting up, walk him in..when he trees it, leash him to the tree, turn your light off, and leave for 10 or 15 minutes. Then walk into the tree with your light on as if he was treed there all by himself and pet him as normal. Good luck and let us all know how he is doing...in A MONTH or so.

That is one reason you should use a dummy collar on them first so that they get use to it being there at all times I put one on them at 10 months old and leave it there from there on until they are completly broke out, just put on the live collar when you leave to hunt that night. and change back when done for the night. Shock collars are not for everyone some people have to much of a temper to use them right.

Danny gave you good advice.. you may try a check cord in a fenced in area during the day...that may help...good luck
