Comp hunters vs meat hunter

How many of you guys and gals out there are only meat hunters?

I'm neither.

I'm not a competitive person other than agaist myself. I also hardly ever shoot a coon out...maybe 2 or 3 a year. I just like hunting and working with a dog in the woods. It doesn't mean I'm not demanding of my dog and myself....I just don't have the coon to shoot and wouldn't do anything with them if I did kill them. I'll never understand why some guys shoot out their hunting spots and then have no coon to tree all winter and spring. So anyway...I voted meat hunter but that doesn't really describe me.

I thought the coon population in my area was down until I kayaked down the river this year. With the lack of rain the coons were able to get the muscles that usually they could not get to. There were probably 100 piles of muscles along the river bank in around 8 miles of river. Some piles would fill up most of a 5 gallon bucket. I sat up a trail camera on the land we hunt with a corn pile and have seen up to 7 coons on the pile at one time. Lots of young coons and several old coons. Even caught a possum eating with the coons which I did not think would happen. Got several pics of deer with one 10 point slipping through around 2 in the morning. Either the lack of rain has moved the coons to the river or the population is coming back up. We have even had great luck treeing coons in the flat woods this year where there is little water. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come. Coons were getting kinda slim around here the last 4 or 5 years.

We just hunt for the meat.... well so far anyways. Just got into the sport about 4 months ago and having a BLAST! Bought a new pup and maybe i'll get into competition hunts w/him!

thats what its all about i think, listening to the hounds run. We dont shoot out many coon, one reason dont have a hugh coon population in this state. Another reason, i dont think older dogs need it.

pleasure only.....

I used to take pleasure in comp hunting, but got tired of the bickering, the gators and questionable calls........ I still go by the club when work allows and give my $ support......... last comp hunt for me (many years ago) the president gave me a little talking too...... so I had to take some time off or get myself BANNED, anyway I took a layoff and never went back (to hunt anyway)........ I've thought about getting back in it, but from what I see on here things haven't changed much and I'm getting to old for it, cause I haven't changed, I'll still stand for whats right......
