? on breeding and selling pups
I have been doing some thinking on if I wanted to show my hand at breeding. Some people that I talk to say they sell pups like hot cakes, but my luck is usually not as good as every one elses. I do know that you would probably not be able to give them away if they were not bred coondog to coondog and if the dame and sire didnt have titles (hunting titles).
I was thinking about giving my first litter away to just people that would have them in the compotitions and a few would go to all the people that helped me get started (put up with me and my hounds in the woods). Do you think that this would be a good idea for geting the out there to see or would they be pased around for profit?
would it be a better idea to sell them as someone wanted them and hunt the rest. As they were hunted and progress in ability the price would go up. If they didnt show me anything still sell them for the puppy price or give them away or somthing else.
what do you think. I know that right now I dont have the money to raise a litter of pups, but I wouldnt breed any of mine until they are real coondogs anyways.
thanks Cory Bricker

it is a very serious decision to make. Do you have the time to socialize those pups like they should be, can you afford the wormer, puppy food, shots, etc that they need. A coonhound can have up to 15 puppies at a time. Usually don't raise all of them, but could. As for 'giving them away' I feel that people should have to pay something for the pup, else it might not be treated as good as say one they paid $1000 for. There is not guarentee that the person you give said puppy to, will really, truely do what they say they will. Had it happen way to many times for me. I have a litter of pups on the ground now, last litter I raised was in Dec. 04. I bred my female this time because she is getting older & I want to keep a pup or 2 from her & this male. Ask yourself, are you adding to the 'coondogs' or the pet overpopulation? I am in no way telling you that breeding your dog is a bad idea, that decision is totally up to you. Go cruise the classifieds & see how many pups are for sale, I bet you can find many 'top bred' pups on there that can be got for free or very little money. Just some food for thought.

EnglishBabe has given you good advice. Think long and hard before breeding a dog. Ask yourself this, would you want another dog just like the one you have?
As for pups being easy to sale, I have 7 females here and I have them posted in the classifeds, lots of lookers but no takers.

Just all 'round , meat gettin' hounds.
I have a 11 month old gyp, that is coming on real good but not finished yet. I also have a 6 year old male that is more or less a meat dog, But could have been a good coondog if he would have been hunte more. I got him when he was 4. runs a track, loud mouth, good tree dog, but he loves runing anything in the woods except for possum. It could just be because he is the oldest but he is my favorit, and I want another male out of him to see what I can do with it. Not going to try and get rich. And already know who I will give pups to.
not going to have a litter until my female is atleast 2. and only if she is coondog stock.
