Lets talk books and get kids reading

School has started back here. I would like to encourage you folks with kids and those that work with kids to get them into reading. It does so much to help them improve their grades and vocabulary. I'm a librarian and love to see them find a great book. They develop a love for reading. I personally read at least one book a week. If your child has a hard time reading try audio books. They are available in both cd and cassette format. Go to the library they have lots to offer and its all FREE!

What I'm reading now.
Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt series. There are about 16 so far.
Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series. There are three books so far.

Both series would be suitable for teens. Dirk Pitt is a marine engineer that gets thown into adventure. Each book starts out with something in history. Then think Indiana Jones meets James Bond and they both go diving. Its lots of fun. LOL.

The Twilight series is about a girl named Bella Swan. She moves to a small Washington town to live with her dad the sheriff. She falls in love with a boy at school, that just happens to be a vampire. Its great fun. Bella is a different heroine, for one thing she's clumsy as an ox in a china store, and Edward has a hard time keeping her from bodily harm. LOL.

Reading

I'm still working very hard to finish Moby Dick... it's been a couple of years and I can only read a small amount at a time because of my brain injury BUT... the book is JUST as good as it was the first time I read it.
For right now...after I'm all packed and set for the Trip to Autumn Oaks I am Planning to start on the last Harry Potter book. I have read the series and enjoyed them. The reading is easier than Moby Dick but not ChildLike at all.
The books you've described sound great! I was an avid reader as a kid AND an adult. We have our oldest son who has Thousands of books and is writing a novel right now as he "takes some time off from college"...( he couldn't stay away and is enrolled in 3 college courses now) Then we have our middle son, 16 1/2... only reads when forced to- I find that very sad but we can't force it. # 3 son,who is 14 can't stop reading... if he loves a book he'll read it again and again. He AND #1 son can read a few books at a time and remember EVERYTHING! I'm jealous! I read a sentance and forget it!LOL... Moby Dick is Burned into my brain though... I can relive the adventures again and again. My parents always got us to the library if we didn't own a book.
Even though I owned the Series-I used to go to the library and read the Little house in the Prairie books. I alwasy wanted to live in the Big WOods! Being Away from Home when I read them made it seem I was In the books better. It is amazing where books can lead us. They encourage imagination that SEEING a movie just doesn't do!
I agree with Amy,Get a child to read! AND... get a kid to excercise, take a kid hunting, let a child know you care- even if it's not your own child. You never know how much reward you might get back later!

There's three book series called "The Circle" written by Ted Dekker. The first one is called Black, the second is Red and the final is White. Hands down the best fiction I've ever read. It has a strong Christian message behind it, but it's not an in your face Christian type book. Very exciting books. My wife typically won't read these type of adventure books, but I got her to try.... she finished all three novels in less then two weeks. I've talked to Christians and non-Christians alike who loved the books. Give them a try. Anyone else read them?

SAVE THE COON, HUNT WITH A HOUND!

I have read all kinds of books. Most of the bools I read are either something about a dog or a western type book of some kind. I also like all the books from john grisham and louis lamour.

I am on the 5th book in the left behind series. You should all read this series, excellent books without all the swearing and usual. i give them a 10 out of 10.

I have read a lot of Louis L'Amour's books. I especially liked the ones that had single names for titles. My favorite was Brionne.

I have read all the Harry Potter books. They are great books for kids and adults alike.

I have read the first four Left Behind Books. They really make you think about the end times and if you will be one of those who will be left behind when the Lord comes for his saints.

I haven't read the Dekker books, but they are on my list.

Another great Christian fiction writer is Terri Blackstock. She writes Mysteries with a good christian message.

Those of you who like to read about hounds and dogs should look up Jim Kjelgaard. He's got some great dog stories.

Another great series for kids is the Chronicles of Narnia series by C. S. Lewis. The first book is the Magician's Nephew, but most people start with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
