Training Tips & Suggestions....

I am looking to hear what different types of training methods everybody out there does. I have a 2 month old pup and wondering what you all do with pups at that age and be able to compare the progress I am making with him. All tips and suggestions are welcome. I am open to any advice seeing that I am rather new to having my own dogs.

at 2months old i try to have them comein to pretty regular starin to teach to lead playin with them with a coon skin puttin them in the truck takin them out to the woods to start their explorin stages take coonskin along play with them when they settle down put coon skin out and let them play with it for a little bit i always play tugowar with ropes and coonskin some times my pups parent get in the way they are still a little young so naturally they want to play to. some would probaly say im wrong but my hounds are spoiled because of me i let them in the house let them ride in the front of the truck with me my hounds try very hard to please me that is all im lookin for a consistent hound that loves to please me. what else could anybody look for a best friend and huntin partner and hound all in one. to me the better bond you have with your hound the better they will become because they want to please you so bad. you have to do every thing in steps what work for one may not work for another i have been fortunate to learn so much in a short time. i will not change my raisin routine at all it works for me hopefully some of what i wrote will help

Selection and culling are the biggest factors in making a "trainer" look good. Exposure can make the difference in a decent dog and an excellent dog.

The trainers job is to expose a pup to the woods and to coon without pushing him ..the dog must then respond in a way that shows enough promise to keep feeding it.

Drags are misleading cuz any dog can smell your boots and body scent much easier than an old hide and equal to any coon piss scent. Get em' in the woods and only keep the ones with a desire to hunt/tree deep within them.

My wife puts puppy leads on our pups and leads them around while she inspects her flowers. We try to put as much attention on our pups as possible but most of it is not hunt related. We save that for later on. Puppies learn more from 7 weeks to 7 months than they will for the rest of their lives. We try to make everything a positive experiance but we teach them what no means.

At 2 months old I really do not do to much as far as training. Although, I do feel that this is a very important time for them to be exposed to new things, such as a lead, and alot of socialization with people. I have been blessed with always having extremely early starting pups, however, I do not think that any of mine really showed any interest in a tree at 2 months old, but at 3 months, the interest was there. I feel, and I am sure many will agree, that if you have a place where a pup can run free (farm raised) all the time with out being tied or put in a pen, this pup will have a real advantage. I am fortunate in this area also, as I let all my pups run loose untill they get to the age that they are wondering too far, which has generally been about 6 months of age. Some may say the down side to this is they probably will be trashy, and I have heard others say not to expose a pup to anything but coon, and this is what they will take to best. Where I live, my pups get started tracking on there own, generally about 4 months old, in the fields, woods etc, as they are running loose. to me, there is nothing nicer than hearing a 4 month old pup striking and running a track on his own. Granted these pups are running rabbits, deer, and fox, but it does develope superior tracking ability at a very young age. My point is, although some or alot may disagree, a pup let run loose will develope a lot faster, and yes, you will more than likely have to eventually break them off trash, but you will know at an early age if you have an exceptional pup.

at four months id jut be getting him to mind me and know what kennel up ment. but a far a training methods no two dogs will train the same some will work a drag.... some want.. some will bark at a caged coon others want.. some only needed to be shown a coon goes up and tree and shot out on them then hunted....others need to be pulled back and coon shot out to other dogs..
