Score this Plus or Minus ???
Here's a couple pics of a Lay-up coon treed by wind only. The question is , do you plus or minus these dogs ?
Picture #1 : Some statistics to go with this picture are : The coon is 15 feet straight above the dog. The dog is 40 feet from the base of tree the coon went up.

Picture # 2: Some statistics on this picture are : The dog is on a bluff at eye level with the coon. The coon is 25 feet from the dog.
NOW , go vote in the poll on one of the FOUR possible scores.

And in case you're wondering , no I can't take credit for a four year old's drawings. ... But they do Illustrate the scenarios very well.

I have a question. For those that minused the dog in #1 If there wasn't a tree under the coon and the dog was sitting directly under the coon would you plus it? In both scenarios the dogs is winding the coon. Dog #1 is 10 feet closer to the coon then #2.

in my opinion there is no way to plus one its slick.... two i would plus because the dog is showing the tree the coon is up.... iff i saw it in real life my verdict might be different but going just from the pics thats how i would do it
quote:yes if there was no tree i would plus... the problem is there is a tree.... if not he would be showing the correct tree so i would vote to plus

I agree minus 1 and plus 2. If the dog had sat on his butt on the first one instead of standing on another tree then I would say plus it. But if he trees on a tree that does not touch the tree with the coon I see no way to plus it. I have a dog right now who is excellant at treeing layups like that. But usually he just stands or sits under the coon and trees. I have had him get minused more than once for stuff like that, everytime it happens he is the only dog in the cast who even knows there is a coon there.

funny how the over half that say to plus the second tree seem to magically change to 75% say no in a four dog cast when it isn't there dog treeing the coon. LOL

I voted to minus 1 and plus 2 but I could understand minusing both cuz the dog isn't on a tree but it looks like he's showing the tree to me #1 gotta be a minus cuz trees r not touching but if there were grapevines or whatever from tree to tree then id plus it #1 is a tuff deal but they are clearly not touching

Regardless of rules, points, or anything such as that, those dogs have NOSE, BRAINS, and true winding ability. Many times my old blue female would tree coons like that. Those type dogs are the most accurate dogs of all because they dont rely on scent on a tree trunk !
I am not a competition hunter but I would say plus the first one and the second one. In my opinion if the dog is treeing by the wind then that scent is falling straight down that tree. that dog does not know that there are two trees, his brain is telling him that then coon is straight up the tree he is on. I dont care how smart a dog is he is not going to figure out the coon is in a different tree when his nose is telling him the scent is coming down the tree he is on. and the coon is right above the tree he is on. Just one more reason I would rather pleasure hunt. both those dogs have the coon no matter what way you look at it.

By the rules dog 1 has to be minused and there is no way around it. He is on a slick tree with a coon in a nearby tree that is not touching.
I also voted to minus dog 2 but that one I would have to see the situation in the woods to rule on it.

Pleasure hunting and scoring with a 22 I'd say both were right but when you pull out the rule book I'd say #1 is minus because of the tree he's standing on not touching the one the coon is in.
#2 is showing coon with no other tree involved.
Only problem is the rule book but you got to write them somehow even if they don't always work like you think they should and I'm not a believer in changing rules unless you have one that doesn't work a large percentage of the time.

depends
If dog in 1 is winding Co on but has feet on tree and is clearly treing at the soon I would plus him using comin sense blood line touched on this I will look for it tonight but if he showing the tree he's standing on were the soon is the minus again comin sense dog 2 if he's clearly treeing at soon and tree he's in then plus if he's treeing because he can't get down then minus again comin sense plays a big role here!
