Clinton and his broken promises
ONE OF the most important issues in Clinton’s 1992 campaign was health care reform. When he took office, 37 million Americans were without any form of health insurance, and the crisis of the health care "non-system" was front-page news in the mainstream media. Early on in his first term, polls showed seven out of 10 Americans supporting a system that would guarantee health care for every person.
But the Clinton administration frittered away this support. Its task force for writing reform legislation--chaired by Hillary Rodham Clinton--compromised again and again under pressure from the health care bosses. The resulting proposal was such a mess that Republicans were able to turn public support against it, and the Clinton "reform" plan died before even coming to a vote. By the time Clinton left office, there were at least 3 million more people uninsured in the U.S.
Abortion rights was another important issue in the 1992 election. During Bush Sr.’s four years in the White House, the U.S. Supreme Court had twice come within a vote or two of overturning the legal right to abortion. Clinton did veto some of the most outrageous anti-abortion proposals from congressional Republicans and Democrats--like the ban on the late-term procedure misnamed "partial-birth abortion" by the right wing, which Bush Jr. is about to sign into law now.
But his administration didn’t lift a finger to get the promised Freedom of Choice Act passed--even when Democrats controlled both houses of Congress. Anti-abortionists were able to chip away at the right to choose with one restriction after another--while the Clinton administration continuously gave ground ideologically.
While on the campaign trail in 1992, Clinton criticized Bush Sr.’s racist policy of intercepting and repatriating Haitian immigrants fleeing repression and trying to get to the U.S. Clinton said that he would consider their requests for asylum. But on the eve of his inauguration, he reversed himself and adopted Bush Sr.’s position.
As a candidate, Clinton also appealed for the votes of gays and lesbians by promising to overturn the ban on homosexuals in the military. As president, he agreed to the miserable "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy, which led to an increase in the number of men and women discharged for their sexuality. And to add insult to injury, Clinton signed the bigoted Defense of Marriage Act that outlawed same-sex marriages.
Both Clinton and Al Gore claimed to be friends of the environment. And with Neanderthals in the White House today who literally deny the existence of global warming caused by pollution, it’s no surprise that they’re still remembered this way. But the Clinton-Gore record is anything but untarnished. For example, destructive logging in old-growth forests--suspended during Bush Sr.’s term--was resumed due to a loophole in an industry-environmentalist agreement supported by Clinton.
Clinton also signed a law eliminating the Delaney Clause, which prohibited the use of any cancer-causing agents that accumulate in processed foods. Yet within a few months of this decision, environmental groups again endorsed Clinton, arguing that he was the lesser of two evils in the 1996 presidential race.
ON SOME issues, Bill Clinton isn’t merely guilty of breaking campaign promises. In important ways, he and his pals stole parts of the Republican agenda wholesale, smoothed out the rough edges and presented it as their own.
The most obvious example is welfare "reform." In the 1994 congressional elections, Republicans--exploiting discontent with the stagnating economy and Clinton’s failure to implement health care reform--made huge gains, winning control of both houses of Congress for the first time in 40 years.
For a time, Clinton was considered to have been marginalized by the so-called "Republican revolution." But he staged a comeback in time to win reelection in 1996--by publicly connecting with the outrage at House Speaker Newt Gingrich and the Republican right, while quietly adopting large parts of their program as his own.
Thus, with a few months to go before the 1996 election, Clinton agreed to the Republicans welfare "reform" legislation--which tore up decades of government assistance to the poor. The booming economy of the late 1990s hid the impact of welfare "reform" for a time, but its real consequence was to make the lives of the most vulnerable people in the U.S. that much harder--with Bill Clinton’s blessing.
Likewise, Clinton adopted right-wing law-and-order rhetoric to pass two "crime bills." The Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, for example, limited appeals in death penalty cases, expanded the number of death penalty-eligible crimes, prohibited fundraising for vaguely defined "terrorist" organizations, and loosened rules against the deportation of legal immigrants--foreshadowing the even more repressive provisions of Bush’s USA PATRIOT Act.
Corporate America couldn’t have had too many complaints about the Clinton administration, either. The Clinton-backed Telecommunications Reform Act of 1996 deregulated the radio market and set the stage for today’s media merger mania. Even as it was making a mess of health care reform, the administration pushed through the NAFTA free trade deal over the objections of many Democratic members of Congress and the opposition of organized labor.
By the late 1990s, as the U.S. economy boomed, workers’ wages finally began rising after nearly a decade of stagnation since the 1990-92 recession. But this increase barely made up for lost ground--while the already rich became massively richer during the boom. Democrats still celebrate the health of the economy during the Clinton years. But the reality is that working people never shared in the benefits of the longest economic expansion on recor
The truth is that Clinton represented the right wing of the Democratic Party. He was a hero of the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC), the right-wing grouping that the party formed with the express purpose of shedding the Democrats’ image of answering to "special interests," like labor, women’s rights groups and racial minorities. Above all, the DLC was formed to make the Democratic Party’s commitment to big business more explicit, and Clinton--who himself chaired the DLC from 1990-91, using it as a launching pad for his presidential campaign--carried this out.
This is the record of Bill Clinton and the Democratic Party, and people who want to fight for real change in society shouldn’t vote for it as the "lesser evil."
So your upset because you cant kill unborn children or marry your boyfriend? You are one sick puppy!!!!

Hey Bulkyker, you must of been in a different Army than I was
We were in Somalia, Haiti, and Bosnia, and each time it got tough Clinton would let "opinion Polls" decide on what to do and yep......he did not have much military knowledge so rather then listen to the Commanders on the Ground or those trained to do the work of WAR.....he cut and run !!!!!!
Clinton is the reason I hung up my Green Beret and retired !! Got tired of fighting half a$$ campains and not being allowed to do what I was trained for.
Army, Navy and Air Force were being dismantled and reduced in size, funds were being cut from our training budgets, equipment was not being brought up to date and modernized, and NO cost of living raises !!! So I remember the Clinton years very well and from the military point many of us did not think much of him !!

Lets not forget the two times Mr. Clinton let Bin Ladden go because he hadnt broken any American laws! How about the 21 acts of terrorism during those eight years that where ignored and led to September 11, 2001. Lets not ever forget again. Dave

Clinton ???
Now come on guys, you cant bring up old Clinton issues just to cover up the screwed up mess Bush has gotton us into.
When Clinton was in office, you could buy gas for about 90 cents a gallon, there were plenty of jobs, everything was running smooth, Bush has put this country in the worst shape I have ever seen. We cannot stand another 3 yrs. Look at what our Republican Governor, and our Republican Mayor of Kokomo, Indiana has put us thru. You can twist things around anyway you want, but the fault lies in Bush and his Admin. Thanks

T Knox we here in Illinois have a Democrat Gov and the major city in Illinois (Chicago) has a Dem Mayor and this State is in the worst condition most say they have ever seen. They have intrusted the greed so much they have driven jobs out of the state and we are in such a mess it will take 8-10 years for us to recover, not because of Bush but because of what they (the Dem party in this state) have done themselves
I don't ever remember getting gas for 90 cents......well maybe back in 1975 when I finished high school but never during the Clinton Adm was it 90 cents LOL
We can bash it around all we want but all those folks sitting on Capital Hill saw the same stuff our President saw (folks like Hillary, John Edwards, John Kerry) and they too voted to take Sadam out !!!!!! So if you want to pass along blame there is a whole lot of room to spread it out on.
Me, I think we are doing the right thing, and Democracy is not learned in a few months, even a few years but learned by passing and learning through generations......teach the children today for they will be the leaders of a free world tomorrow.

Yes Dave.........we in the Military knew Clinton did not have much fight in him, and yes he let lots of things slip through the cracks and had he done something other than lob a couple of $100,000 missles at some empty tents and a camel or two things may have been different.
The World looked at us and our leadership as they took away our ability to fight and stay a major power in the world, they watched as we weakened our defenses, and they knew we were rip for an attack and they took us totaly by suprise and they also knew Willy had let our defense agencies be stripped down to the bare ends to make things look good on the books........and we paid for it on Sept 11th.
Yes those of us that know will NEVER forget !!!!!

I bet the people that died on 9-11 would be glad to pay $3.00 for a gallon of gas right now!

All these people that have died in the Iraq war are not Republican or Democratic, but Americans.
I am sure their are both Republicans and Democratic are fighting in this war. Some may not agree with going to war, but they are doing their job.
This country of today is so divided. This president ran on being a uniter not a divider. Like my good friend Dick Gephardt told me. At one time Democats and Republicans fight hard for their differing convictions on the floor of the house, then go afterward for a friendly beer together. Now democratic and republicans don't even make eye contact when they pass one another in the halls of Congress, unless it's to exchange furious glares. The problem today extends far beyond Washington. The same hate hostile, partisan atmosphere is seen in state legislatures and city councils and return is turning our citizens this way. Dick also told me that at first he liked our president and thought he could trust him not because he was not a Democrat or Republican but a good honest man. He found out later he could not trust him. One thing and this is true that our president made fun of Gephardt family because he was raised poor and his family were rich.
Now before you bash Mr. Gephardt I remember him on Dec, 19, 1998 standing in vote of the congress in support of Bob Livingston a Republican from Louisiana in which he was going to be elected the new majority leader in congress. This was a time when every Republican was wanting Clinton out of office for having an affair. Mr Livingston also was having an affair with another women. Mr. Gephardt said, "Our founding fathers created a system of government of men, not of angels. No one standing in this House today can pass a puritanical test of purity that some are demanding that our elected leaders take.
Mr. Gephardt told me about NAFTA. In 1990 President Bush was responding to then Mexico president Calos Salinas calls wanting a trade agreement. In early 1992 President Bush was trying to bring NAFTA to a close, but it was not to be because President Clinton got to be president. Yes, NAFTA was signed with Bill Clinton in office, but alot of things were taken out because it would of been worse then it was. Mr. Gephardt would not support NAFTA because of side agreements were put in the bill by Mexico in which they did not have to enforce labor or environment laws if broken resulting in two years from 500,000 workers on the border to now millions of Mexico workers making less money then when the treaty was signed.
I call Mr Gephardt the best president we never had. Alot of the people on this board is worth more then him. Just check it out.
I feel until we treat are fellow Americans with respect our country will have a long haul.

Bush is an Idiot. He has slowly but surely made enemy after enemy after enemy all over this world. Open your eyes and look around folks. Look at all the countries that Bush has ran his big fat mouth to and gave his "ORDERS" to just like he was THERE PRESIDENT. When his majesty speaks he expects all these foreign countries to just hop to it and do exactly what he tells them to do. Then when they dont he stomps his feet and cries like a baby and starts threatening everyone and then, eventually, attacks that country. He cant get it thru his thick, fat, stupid head that NOT EVERYONE IS LIKE US AND NOT EVERY COUNTRY LIVES LIKE WE DO OR WANTS A GOVERNMENT JUST LIKE OURS. When all these other countries that Bush has MADE ENEMIES OUT OF ALL GET TOGETHER AND DECIDE THAT THEY ARE TIRED OR OUR B.S. THEN WERE GONNA HAVE SOME SERIOUS PROBLEMS. SERIOUS PROBLEMS. And everyone of them problems will be President Bush's fault. LIke I said, he is an Idiot. Period.
