Purina Race Shows...

just wondering what everyone's thoughts are that the Purina shows at state level takes away from the entry's. KY state was this weekend and for instance the grand classes the males had what 3 or 4 dogs each day and the grand females only 3 on Fri. and what 4 maybe 5 on sat. that's very disappointing. no more dogs came to show. is it that the local state dogs owners and handlers don't want to show against the Purina race dogs or what.. just curious of what people think..

Steve,

I do think that is the case. The Ga State is not a Purina event anymore. We showed over 60 dogs last year but none of the "Big Dogs" were there because it was not Purina. We drew dogs from 5 different states. And the GRCH class was our biggest - so yes I do think that there are alot of people who have top State Level dogs who do not attend because they feel "outdogged" by the Purina Race Dogs.

JMO - I'm not against the Purina Race - just answering the question so nobody kill me on this......................

I dont think Ive ever stayed home from any event, hunt or show, because I thought I would be outdogged........before I did the simple solution would be to just get a better dog.

In fact I had a great time hunting and showing at AO a couple years ago mostly because of the chance to stack up agianst that type of dogs. Thats why I go to events in the first place, to see how what I have stacks up agianst the rest of whats out there.

Winning means more the higher level you compete at, and at the same time losing means less.

Sam & I don't run in the Purina races, but you will see us at about half of them through out the year because we like the bigger hound events. 2008 we traveled to them for the show only and to have a good time with other hounds people because our friends just don't understand our love for the hounds. This year we chose the ones that had water & field events over just a show alone. We have found, for us, win or loose, that trying to get our hounds in the winning circle with the WR & FT events is much more fun and exciting. Even if we do loose, we know it was because our dog just flat out got beat and not us...

I used to bust my behind to get my hounds ready for the show, but found the effort was pointless. We have made the cuts with the "big players" lots of times, but have never, not one time, ever pulled out on top with a win in the end at a bigger show. "Sometimes" I know we were beat by the handler and not the hound. Everyone has seen a crappy dog win because of who is standing behind it. BUT, let me say this, I know that I am not that great of a handler either. So I always except getting beat graciously and go on. Sam tells me I look at the handlers I am going against before I ever check out the hounds. He says I have myself whooped before I ever even pay my entry fee. LOL...I tell him that I know that my hound can do his part and that's what "I" have to beat, is the handler. So, if I know I can not beat that handler, then I just don't waste that $10, $15 or even sometimes $20 bucks. It just comes down to basic economics for some folks. Call me a tight wod, but you will never call me a sore looser. I just don't have that kind of money to throw away. This year we have campaiged 4, 5 and 6 hounds in the water and field events. That many entry fees X two events and the travel expences. Well, you do the math. There is just no extra money to be throwing away just to make my hound stand pretty on a bench, which I have found is much harder to do than to say.

We always have a great time no matter what. We take the time to hang around and meet folks & talk hounds. We never finish an event and throw the dogs in the box and go, win or loose. We really enjoy the whole atmosphere and that is part of why we even go in the first place.

While watching a show, I really like seeing the best dog win, instead of the same ole same ole everytime. In "some cases" I have seen much better looking hounds that I thought should have won, just flat out get over looked. Just watching the show gets frustrating sometimes. But, I do like watching the show's because, it's great to see the appreciation of the win in the unexpected handlers faces when thier hound is chosen. It does give the rest of us a little glimmer of hope for the next time.

I am not saying that those same handful of dogs don't deserve to win sometimes, or even most of the time. They are beautiful hounds. I am just saying that there are sometimes better hounds on some days that just don't get to shine when they rightfully should, Purina Race or no Purina Race.... JMO...

So to sum it all up, yeah, that's why we don't show in more of them. I know when I, the handler, am out classed and I except that. I am just not going to make my hound look bad over and over by consistantly setting him or her up for a loss. I know he is a better hound than "some" we have shown against, but it doesn't always come down to the better hound....Again, JMO

Yep, same thing with the Mississippi State last year....Not that many entries, but still a nice event. The big named dogs nor handlers were there. I don't remember, but I am pretty dang sure it was not a Purina Race event either. TJ managed to pull out the win for Over All Mississippi State Show Champion @ 10 months old!...I was simply thrilled !! It came down to me & TJ and a very good friend of ours and his very nice female. I almost felt bad for winning because I know he wanted the win just as bad as I did. But, in the end, on that day, the judge picked TJ...We both knew it was about what the judge saw in those two hounds on that day and not either of us.

With TJ & Tracker I have never felt "OUT DOGGED" no matter where we go....Again, JMO

purina race

this has got all out of wack. it was meant for all state asst. and the purina race commitie.to consider haveing a seperate show for the purina race. and even the hunt . im sorry if anyone took it the wrong way. but over the last five years the purina race has hurt all state shows. thats all this was meant to be.. i appoligize if anyone took this thread the wrong way.. steve randolph..

I personally think it should go like this:

A UKC show where all show for UKC points for a certain entry fee.

Then a PURINA SHOW for PURINA points for $10 more and half the fee go into the AWARD MONEY for the BREED and OVERALL winner in the end.

Also I would like to see in the PURINA race, 1 handler per dog in BOTH the HUNT and SHOW.

That way the common hunter with a decent dog has a chance to travel and run without having to pay a handler to help run in other states.

Wow Richard! You put alot of thought into that! Sounds like a great idea! Have you pitched that to UKC yet? LOL!

Hope you are doing well!

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS,

I don't believe what I'm reading. The purina race takes a special hound, one that is consistant in performance and the owner/handler wants to spend time and money working their hound and traveling to the events.

I'm not a beginner at this game and I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE NO ONE HAS WON ANY MORE SHOWS IN THE LAST 45 YRS. THAN I HAVE. NO ONE HAS PAYED MORE ENTRIES THAN I HAVE AND NO HAS BEEN BEAT ANYMORE THAN I HAVE!!!

I said that to say this. The purina race is a very good thing and brings a lot of honor and prestige with the win.

If you think you purina events hurt entries in your hunt or show "the only thing your missing is your SIGN". You might have more local winners but if you can't win withe best of the best there you really haven't won..

FROM THE JUNIOR LASSETER FAMILY::: TO A MAN WHOM WE RESPECT AS BREEDER A HUNTER AND WONDERFUL FRIEND "CONGRULATIONS' '' LEE CURRENS ''!
Also CONGRATS to two great handlers LISA!!! and MIKE for a job well done...

I believe the formula is if you can't beatum get a piece of the pie and come back.

See you all at the Battle in Okla.

Good idea.................That would also produce more revenue for UKC because there would be more participation. Perhaps have the race ran off in every state and the winners from each state participate against each other and have a central location for the participants in the western states.

Nothing has been said about anyone getting beat by Purina runners.

The point being made is to help the locals be able to support the events WITHOUT the pressure of the PURINA being in their mind.

Be like me going to a local UFC fight and the California Kid show up. Not a good feeling to have. You know your beat before you enter. (might be able to outrun him BUT not beat him)
