Longer Kill Season in Indiana?

I have heard several rumors of Indiana going to longer kill season.
Even heard two guys say maybe even year around.
I personally would hate to see year around but would like to see it lengthened maybe start October 1st.
Is anybody else hearing this and do you have any facts?

Fur would be no good to extend the season thru Feb and a lot of years the weather would knock out the northern half of the state.. Would hate to see it open in March as i'd hate to knock out a wet sow.. Just hate that..

opening early does little good as the deer hunters have things pretty well shut down from Oct on..

Don't really know if there's any benefit to it..

Ark has a year around kill season I say year around it shuts down for a few months when kits are born and opens back up i think in july its a one a night only kill and it has worked for them

i really wish oklahoma would open our season up like that also.

I really like how Arkansas does it. I don't want to kill a wet sow either or even every coon my dogs tree!! But every farmer I ask permission to hunt on says I can only hunt if I kill every coon I tree. I don't do that, but that is their request!!!!

I just got busted shooting a kitten coon along a corn field where I had permission to hunt in October. It's a Class "C" Misdemeanor, they can take you to jail and take every thing you have on you at the time. I paid $330 to get into the deferral program and another $80 for the 24 hours of community service I have to do.

I personally think this is a bit much for killing a coon that is on property where a farmer wants you to kill them for destroying their crops.

Just my opinion...you can rant and rave all you want at me and tell me how wrong I am, but you will never change my mind!!

Can't the land owner get a kill permit for crop damage? Here in Va I know they can get a kill permit, I use to hunt a sweet corn patch a man raised to sell and he had the permit.

Thanks for the responses as for the seasons on the dnr website that don't mean much because most changes usually are not announced till July 1st in Indiana. I will add that it makes no sense that our coon season Is shorter than most everything else including deer.

I would maybe go for a 1 a night bag limit year round. I'm sure this won't be popular, but I think killing a bunch of coon to train a dog is overrated. I would also say that it wouldn't bother me if the price on furs never went over $1.

I agree, but I would go for a 1 per week bag limit year round, or 3 per month, or even 2 per month, just something to be able to reward a dog "occasionally" instead of going 9 months.

That is me!!!! The coon I shot in October was to a 5 month old pup!!! I NEED A GOOD ONE!!!!

why is it a reward?? my hounds are not pets they are working dogs if they do not earn there keep they do not stay here they have a job to do, the only time they do not get a coon is in night hunts .

If you are not "rewarding" them with a coon to reinforce a particular behavior...ie treeing them...then what are you doing it for? Do you have a freezer full of coon meat that you feed your family with?

Some of the most highly trained "working" dogs are drug/police dogs. Funny I have never seen one locate a bag of dope and the trainer/handler pop open the bag and give it to the dog.

to me that is there pay, I have 1000s of Acers I hunt and the owners want me to kill the coon, I will not debate with you or anyone else on why I give my dogs the coon they tree, you are talking about 2 different things when you say drug dogs and coon dogs, I have gotten dogs ready for world hunts that have won world hunts you have your way I have mine. when I go to a hunt I win my cast that is all I can do.

I think they should leave it alone In. fur no good in oct why kill coon and leave them lay thats a waste and about the reward thats funny if my dog don't know there's a coon in the tree he on he can't eat my feed any dog can tree a coon but a dog with brains know he there

Buckbrush, i'm with you..can't imagine hunting seriously and not knocking coon out to a hound and when it's hide season I'd prefer to knock out a bunch.. But I was raised a hide hunter and a fur trapper and that is what I enjoy out of the game.. Love to see a dog really dialed in and knocking 4,6,12, 20 or whatever he trees in a night, shoot i've killed as many in a night in years past as I did all last season.. Dog power is a bit different .

First i've hunted these IN woods in the last five years, but it appears there is no shortage of coon.. Years past we would take between 100-300 coon off the same ground each year for many years..

Always had a decent hound or two and some years made some significant money from fur or selling a young dog

This past year I only killed 22-23 coon alone to a young dog i was hunting and probably that many hunting with other folks.. Trapped another 40 and a few fox..

Bet I kill double that off the same ground next year as i'll be hunting a finished hound instead of a pup..

Be nice to knock a few out this spring and summer legally, but don't figure that is possible..

Appreciate the efforst of HTDA working for the houndsmen.. And the years the weather cooperates id surely like to hunt later, but wouldn't kill a lot of fur as our coons are generally badly rubbed by now.

I've trained a few pretty good dogs. I've never once killed a coon to dog and seen it change the dog. Bellar was unhappy with me every time he called to see how Harry was doing. Hunted him 6 months killed 3 coons, made him nt. ch. 4 wins to gr. they picked him up and won world hunt.

I kill them simply because I enjoy it. I don't think it makes much diff in a dog. Dog slicks 4 times,trees coon,then will slick again. Or dog rarely misses whether it has one shot out or not. I don't think there is a right to wrong answer. I have tried to make them extinct for 30 yrs. hopefully I have another 40 yrs to work on it. I am one of the few self admitting coon killers. Now burn me at the stake LOL

All these hunters that cry around carry a gun every night season or not are not much of a Sportsman. Lord a lot of these guys screw up dogs giving them so many coons. Just make them into a dog that will tree up a light pole The Best tree dogs I every seen were from hide hunters in Ohio that didn't let there dog have the coon. I would try to tease a dog before feeding his gut with them. Lord I have hunted 40 years I never put out but one a night, My old dogs cant count here in Ky were most of the coon dogs were born.

Just me thinkin but I think every dog is different my male could care less to chew on a coon but my female I've noticed this last month with a bunch of dens and not getting her fill of coon to play with gets a little lose on the tree. If I was a coondog and busted my butt I'd be a little upset if all I got was a little pat on the head and a "thata boy". But there are places that I hunt in the summer that the farmers won't let me hunt during season cause of deer. So it all works out.

I agree, one a night or week or even every two weeks. But give us something during the summer!! I ruined a good young dog one year when season went out I stopped shooting coons. In one month he went from 70% accurate to 35% accurate cause he thought treeing was his reward?? Since then I have tried to keep some fur in their mouth to keep them going the right direction. Not anymore, I am going back to shooting ZERO coons till season comes in. We will see what kind of a hound I have with no fur in his mouth???

WE NEED A LONGER KIL SEASON!!

FARMERS WOIULD APPRECIATE IT, TURKEY HUNTERS AND DEER HUNTERS SHOULD ALSO. COONS EAT CORN IN THE FIELD, OUT OF DEER, CATTLE, AND HOG FEEDERS, AND TURKEY EGGS, PLUS WHEN ACORNS ARE ON, THEY EAT THIOSE BEFORE THEY HIT THE GROUND FOR DEER. C,MON MAN,GIVE US YEAR ROUND SEASON LIKE ARKANSAS!!!

Sound advice from an experienced hunter. I do believe if you have a wild one you can tighten the dog up by knocking out more coon to him. But as a general rule I agree with Bruce. 30 years ago I was a coon murderer. I thought you needed to kill every coon the dog treed. Time and experience has definitely changed my tune on this subject.
