D*MNED if I DO....D*MNED if I DONT(Feeder Buckets)

People say that they hate feeder buckets and FEEDER BUCKET DOGS,now let's just stop for a minute and think about something. Some states don't have a large coon population like Indiana and Ohio, where no bucket is needed in most places, and the corn fields don't grow year around in the states where coon population is low.Now this is all dandy for pleasure hunting but what if someone drives UPTEEN miles to a big comp hunt only to draw out Ol Jimmie and his dog Buster who has decided to enter the big local hunt but has to be a guide being that he's right up the road from the hunt. Now Jimmie don't believe in feeder buckets cause he's use to one or two drops a nite and going home, takes you to the local Wildlife Refuge were everybody and they mama shot coons out the week leading up to the big hunt,so what do you thinks gonna happen?Right it aint gonna be good at all!Yeah you might win your cast but I wouldn't waste a haircut on a photo op,feel me...
Ok now let's say while you over there trying to win you cast, your hunting buddy Wendell who you beat on a nightly bases draws out with Harry and his dog Slim Jim,and HarryBoy is guiding. Now Oh Harry got bout 4 spots with feeder buckets up ALLLL year long,Harry been feeding them coons honey buns, cakes and purina pro plan,Harry got the coons trained to just run up the tree and wait for Slim Jim to come bark for a while and leave so they can eat in peace,Harry aint shot a coon down since man landed on the moon!Ok while you over there dealing with Jimmie,Harry got 850+ in 1 hour with another to BOOT!
Now here's the kicker Harry come in with 1600+ win the hunt and all its goodies, next month Ol Slim Jim on the cover of COONHOUND cheesing like chester! Now who cares that you beat Buster and won you cast with 525+ on WILD COON?NOBODY and to put it in reverse and run you over....Ol Slim down there getting the skin rubbed off his while breeding to all them females who's owners saw him on the cover of the mag while watching TAILGATE ADVENTURES lol.Just something to think about as you head down to your next BIG HUNT where the coons aren't to friendly......I'm gonna be hoping to draw out with Ol Slim Jim and them feeder buckets.

Man o man...you nailed it...preach to em brother!

That is why I've always said that winning a hunt is a poor selection criteria for breeding. Nobody asks "how" they won...we just recognize that they did in fact win.....

I'm still belly laughin!

I Love Feeders Too

Here is my feelings: I love to hunt 7 night a week and yes we are not suppose to hunt on Sunday nights here in Mineral County, WV. I do it anyways. But I work a regular 40 hour week job on first shift. Then I come home to a beef farm. June through September I am in the hay fields til after dark everyday. Guess what I am not going to feel like spending three hours hunting to find a coon. I do not hunt feeders in season. But during hay season I have spots with feeders I can go in and tree within 30 minutes and be headed to another spot or home to get some much needed sleep. Hate me if you want but my dogs have no issue treeing coons in season without feeders.

Random Thoughts.........

When did we stop COON hunting and start GUIDE hunting?..........Should UKC have a GUIDE Hall of Fame?.......How much money would a cast give out to a guide to take them to the GOOD spots?......Do people know feeders can mask a dogs weakness?.....Who would scratch there dogs if the guide told them its feeder bucket hunting all night?.........Random Guide drawing at the big hunts?......

It has been a long time since I been down there, but I do remember Vale, N.C. We were cutting loose about 7 years after Hugo went through. I will admit it was interesting.

I actually didn't think it was as bad as it could have been and we looked at a few coons too.

I think feeder buckets have there place in keeping game in the area and training pups. But I have been saying for years that it should be against all kc's rules to hunt off feeder buckets. I had a black lab that would smoke a bucket coon and have the meat when you got there. But wouldn't go look for one other wise. I think a dog should have to be a proven hunter to recieve any titles. Treeing hot coons off of a feeder bucket doesn't suggest that a dog is a coondog. If buckets was illegal in nite hunts everyone would be on the same playing feild. JMO

Well I went through the rules real quick and couldn't find it however isn't it illegal in NC to hunt game over feed? If its against a states game laws isn't it against UKC night hunt rules?
IF so then the other cast should be scratched.

Money the root of all evil

My Opinion, Most of the time money rules the playing field. Don't think there's any way to level the playing field.

It's not against the law in my state. But you are right if your state has a law prohibiting hunting small game over bait it should be a scrathable affence. I'm 99.9% sure I read in ukc rules all local laws are to be followed on a nite hunt.

Who is going to search all the hunting areas for buckets? What about just putting it on the ground. Pouring it off a bridge on your way by every day. No way to enforce it if you make it against the rules. Pretty hard to find honey on a stump.
No way to make sure the best dog makes it to the top. Luck of the draw will allways play in to it AND haveing the money and time to go early and make a deal for good hunting ground. I think most farmers would let you hunt a cast on there ground one or two nights for a hundred bucks. Then just sighn up to be a guide.
Any place were a rancher feeds his cattle cubes. That is a feeder bucket.

Hey I don't mind hunting a bucket now and then. But, in the state of Va. it is illegal to hunt a bucket. If your caught I hope they take it easy on 'ya. The Game Wardens around here are starting to watch coon hunters really hard about buckets. Where the wardens get some of the guys here, is when they go in to fill them up there watching, and then he/she waits until they go back and turn their dogs loose on the buckets. They are tightening the screws here. I am afraid to put any out anymore. All I can say is be CAREFUL!

as far as the law about hunting over feeders, in Ohio "Hunting" is defined as the pursuit with intent of harvesting a game animal, with no intent to kill then I don't see it as illegal while pleasure or comp. hunting out of "kill season".

DarkMan... that's why many hunt the "other" registries where you have to beat the dogs you draw and not Ole Slim Jim and 55 feeder buckets! UKC's scoring policy has "encouraged" competition hunters to try and put up big scores quick with the feeder buckets!

I hunt buckets and places with no buckets. About a fifty, fifty split. Ok, here is the deal. People will bash hunting on buckets and say the coons are not "WILD" and it is not fair. Lets say you are deer hunting over a corn pile and kill a Booner. Will you brag about how you sat in the heated box house for over an hour until the hand warmers you were using gave out and you had turn your propane heater back on, then you had to move slowly to the shooting window and fire a shot from your 300 short mag at over 75 yards and then you had to track that monster 500 yards because you must have knocked your scope off on your $2,200 setup while you were riding your ATV into your gated 1000 acre lease? I think you would. So if I beat three dogs who are used to hunting feeder buckets, I will brag. I won and had the best dog on that cast and maybe scored 1200. Next time when I only score a third of that on natural drops and still win my cast. Yep you got it, I am going to be just as happy. Dog did its job so it deserves it.

my opinions.

i hunt both buckets and wild coon. my dogs tree coons the same way on a bucket as they do a wild coon. when we hunt away from the buckets i always find myself saying "MAN I HOPE A COON HAS MOVED THROUGH HERE TONIGHT!" when u hunt a bucket you can normally never have to ask yourself that question. What i am sick of is these ppl saying they can bring there lab/retiriever/bulldog/ weiner dog and tree a coon on a bucket. Somebody please bring it and show me i beg you, all this talk about it and i have yet to see a boxer throwing 110 bark per minute on a bucket coon. but what about that dual grand that pulls up the tree the buckets on? i have seen more dogs not check there selves on a bucket then ones that go on and have the meat! COON DOG huh...
