New B&T owner.

So my boy is my first Black and Tan I have had. I have been a Lab and Flat coat guy and I currently have an ACD. Any advice would be good. I need to have someone look at my boy when he’s older. I have always had fixed dogs. He has a good blood line, UKC PR dog. I might want to stud him if he looks like a good candidate. If he’s just average I will have him fixed. Any breeders in SE Michigan that would look at him in the spring? I got this boy in Tennessee. I live in a real duck dog area, not sent hounds.

Black and Tan

If this is a hound dog breed, you are not going to get much of
a duck dog out of him. These dogs are scent dogs that trail and tree, NOT retrieve. I guess you could try and see if he would retrieve ****s, but you would be much wiser to train a retrieve bred dog. IMO. Dave

If I understand you right, you bought a Black and Tan Coonhound and are wanting to stud him out? Please don’t take this the wrong way, but most coon hunters are not going to come pay you a stud fee just because you have a pretty dog with papers. Folks are looking for dogs who have proven themselves in the field to breed their females to. You might find somebody who raises Black and Tans just for the show ring who would be interested IF your dog had an exceptional build and conformation. I would try digging around and finding a site for showing Black and Tans in the ring.

Personally I would'nt get one cut on some one else's opinion. Let him grow up and see what he develops into. You don't have to breed him, but if he turns into something you would want a pup out of you might regret getting him cut. As mentioned most people are going to want to see what he does in the woods before they breed to one. Enjoy your hound.
