Do you think it makes a difference now?
Years ago, when Warren Haslouer offered pups for sale out of Diamond Jim, he announced that the mothers of the pups could run and tree their own coon....and that was it! It was enough then to sell every pup that he could raise, and there was always a waiting list....for pups out of females that could run and tree their own coon. That was enough back then. My question is, do you think it is enough now? I read an interview with Elbert Vaughn from years gone by, and he was asked if he believed the day would come when dogs would be judged on the basis of titles or hunts they had won. His answer was, "No"! He was basing it on his own experience for his dogs, for the most part, were not competition hunted yet the demand for his pups was much greater than the pups he could raise!!! He had a loooooooong waiting list! Is it enough today to use a well known stud, that has proven his ability to reproduce, from females that can tree their own coon?

Good question Craig ---BUT there are many that claim their female can run and tree their own coon when in reality they never get hunted, just couch dogs.
If I were in the market for another dog, I would surely take a look at the female regardless of what male the pups were from.
there has been a good bit of discussion about that and I firmly believe that the female can and will pass on and have a longer effect on the type of offspring that is produced.
I guess one should say if they truly can do it in the woods it is enough... even though I am not from Missouri,, Show Me!
back in the day --the females were never hunted they were just brood females --maybe that's what MR. HASLOUER was trying to say

Females
GENETICS play the major role in reproducing good offspring some top females do not reproduce and some brood females do, you don't always get what you see in dogs, but I agree it's nice to see a top female, on the other hand the owners have ruined more dogs than there pedigree ever did! Look at the adds full of young well bred dogs ( never hunted, green as grass, etc etc etc.) every forum, you see same story......
Dogs
Most females bred can tree a coon 40 years ago the coon population was much thinner in some areas the well known hunters and breeders like Warren, Mr. Vaughn could sell every pup. The pup market isn't what it used to be either
Thanks for your input. I personally believe the female is just as important, if not more so, than the male. The context is not the same now as it was 30-40 years ago; so much has changed; however, the dogs don't know it. They still reproduce according to their genetic make up.
