Starting young dogs by themselves
I've got a couple young dogs(littermates) about 15 months old. Since they were pups I've walked them in the daylight/ night time all the stuff you need to do to get them acclimated. They've only seen two coon in a roll cage, they've treed a couple box trapped coon. I've got no old dog. Been hunting them every other night, female one night male the next. They're running all kinda tracks. Trashing some and also taking tracks that should end in trees and not finishing them. what would you all do in this situation? Just stay the course?
Turned loose boxed trapped coons or pulled up a tree caged coons? Maybe put out bucket and see if they'll tree pop ups.if so don't over do it,bout 3 times should do it.
Turned loose coon. Didn't let them see coon or trap. Turned loose went and got dogs and they struck and treed. They just been starting an awful lot a tracks at night and not putting an end to them. To be fair, I've only been hunting them a few weeks like this since its starting to cool down at night.
if it was me, and didnt have a finished dog to hunt them with, i would try to hunt them on feeders some. to get them on some hot tracks. and also do some scouting and try to figure out when the coon are moving and find some natural feeding areas to drop them in

Keep hunting them they will start like a switch went off !! If there going to start , most do some don't of you know momma and daddy and ancestors you should know what is bred into them, how bout other siblins what are they doing ? I start all mine alone and all I can suggest is be patient and expect a lot of nights with nothing' but if they are hunting and running trash they have the hard part to find these days and that desire and go !! The rest should take care of itself in time !!
quote:they treed turned loose coons, they can tree wild coons. Keep taking them, situation will meet opportunity and they'll click.
