Young dog treeing question
I got a young dog he's almost 17 months old and I've had him ever since he's been 6 months old and he can run a track awesome.
But when it comes to treeing he doesn't know that the coon went up the tree. I've fooled with him with cage coons and dead ones, as long as he can see them in the tree he will tree on it.
He has ran loose ever since I brought him home. He's very independent.
Any suggestions to help him tree when I hunt him at night?

He will tree when he is ready showing him all those coon has propbly hurt him. More then help him ! He needs th get on the rite track where he is red hot on a coon and **** near catches him going up the tree and get that coon shot out and if that doesn't make him propably nothin will ! You can take tree out but you can't put it in where it isn't but remember a lot of pups are later picturing it together and Imo the ones that trial first and tree second are a lot more accurate and usually your dogs that you will keep till they pass instead of selling ! Don't let him see any put some buckets put to get a steady coon flo coming to them you can even put a wildlife camera on bucket to see what time coons are feeding and then meet them there at feeding time and hunt him a,one as a pup alone has a better chance on coming up on a red hot coon versus hunting with other dogs that as soon as they smell a coon they will let every coon on the bottom know your are there good luck and patience. I don't show any of my pups a coon usually but I will put them on hot tracks when starting out
I didn't show him very many cage coons and when I did I spaced them out like one every once in awhile.
Where I live we don't have very many coons and I work 5-6 nights a week and it's hard to get to hunt him like he needs.
I'll just keep hunting him and try to get him on a hot one
Thank you for your suggestion POTOMAC

If you have to set you some traps and then once you catch a coon wet it down and cut it loose out in a field say atleaat 75 yards to the woods as to where it won't have a tree to immediatky climb once it leaves the cage turn your light off and walk away most coon won't climb if you make them go that far to the woods and you are walking away from them they don't feel a sense of urgency to climb then wait 10-15 min and cast your dog like you are going hunting and he will hit a hot traxk wothout seeing it !! Then once he trees one or a few of those then trap a coon where you hunt and let him go rite where you trapped him at !! He is in his home turf there and he will know how and where to run will make for longer chases then once he is doing good at that just go to hunting him alone and let him find his own ! It is a lot of time and patience and he might run up on the rite one the first night it might take 30 nights but if he will tree on a hang up he will tree on a real one !! Make him earn a coon if he doesn't do it rite he don't get it ! Good luck keep us posted
Ive got the perfect solution for your pup. Catch a caged coon. I dont like to put the dog and the coon in the truck at the same time. It causes them to start barking in the box. Turn the coon loose make that coon go up a tree yourself whether u need a stick or a baseball bat. Then get your dog out and if he tracks it to the tree tie him up. If he barks talk him up let him know that is what you want him to do. Let him tree for 5 min or so. If he is not gun shy knock him out to him. If he trees this coon then u will need to start feeding coons to get some close so they will be good tracks for him and u can rush in there and get him tied up quick. Ive started plenty of dogs with just 2 caged coons just started one 6 months old this way it is the only way in my eyes. Get some jack links beef jerky or something similar if he does right give him a piece or to when u get back to the truck. Good luck
