Why are redbones underestimated so much?
Here in Louisiana when people find out I coon hunt with redbones they laugh or tell me to get a Walker. Most people say redbones are mean but all the mean dogs i have encountered where walkers but all breeds have some mean dogs. But after they see my pups hunt they tell me how good they are and ask are they for sale. Got a chance to meet Kasey Dooley at a hunt and really enjoyed finally having a redbone hunter to talk too. I plan on showing more and more hunters what redbones can do instead of stereotyping the breed.

I think it's do to their reputation in bigger competition hunts...especially the money based hunts. There just haven't been that many redbones winning them over the last 30 years. Some like to say it's because we don't have the numbers...but by % of the entries in major hunts I think we should see more redbones winning and we are still are way behind a few other breeds.
But the good news is...we are starting to see early signs of change in the redbone breed. There has always been one pop up here and there and do a little winning every couple years...but if we are going to break the stereotype we need to see several each year placing high or winning big hunts that are usually dominated by walkers. Part of the problem that haunts this breed comes from handlers of other breeds witnessing a lack of drive and competitiveness over the years when they have drawn redbones. They draw so few in competition that they tend to base their whole opinion on that one red dog they drew back in 1997...lol
I think there are several lines of redbones that are being bred and promoted today that can...and hopefully will eventually break those old stereotypes held by the people who hunt other breeds. The key is to breed for dogs that can compete and beat those other breeds, train them correctly and specifically to win in competition....and then show up to key, important hunts with several redbones and be honest with ourselves about what happens on those casts.
Accurately assess our redbones truthfully and honestly and if they get beat by dogs with more ability fairly and according to the rules...admit that to yourself and formulate a plan to breed into your line of redbones those traits that will allow you to beat those dogs down the road.
Far too many who criticize certain types of hunts and certain breeds of dogs have never even entered their redbones in a top level event...and if they have and got beat...they made excuses for their lack of dog power.
We can't do this if we ever want to reach the top in the numbers that will eventually change others perceptions about the redbone breed.
No breed is perfect....but some are way more popular than others...so why is that?
I think it's because most competition hunters want to win...so they hunt a breed that wins a lot. We can change that...all we have to do is start winning bigger hunts more frequently and do it with redbones. Sounds easy right...lol
They trouble is we just don't produce enough truly great redbones, and many who do hunt redbones are not serious competition hunters...so that kind of splits the already small number of redbones who probably could win...in half.
I think we are turning a corner or starting a new chapter in the story of competition redbones though. One third to one half of all the pups I raise each year are starting to go to competition hunters who have been hunting other breeds. This is a great thing because most of them have a lot of experience in top level hunts and don't make excuses for a dog or its ability like many over protective redbone hunters do. If the dog has what it takes to win...they will know it ....and know what to do with it.
One person, or even one group of redbone hunters cannot change this whole breed in the minds of most of the guys who hunt other breeds...but if we get enough like minded, serious competition hunters and breeders working towards some common goals...I think we just might see a change in how others view the redbone breed in competition circles.
Good luck with your dog's and keep working to prove to others what you already know about your own dogs and eventually, if you are right about them...others will see that to

You rarely if ever see a big time winning handler in any breed criticize another breed. They know that there are good and bad in every breed and if they've been on the top very long, they've probably been beat by most breeds at some time in their career. They also know the shortcomings of their own breed.
Derogatory comments of other breeds usually comes from immature , inexperienced, and uneducated people.

Both of yall are right! I watch and see how yall push your hounds as far as competition and I truly get motivated to follow the direction to promote my pups and to hunt them to showcase our breed. The outlaw and t-top guys have done a great job and I love the pups I'm hunting out of them!!
