14 hands is plenty big enough for a long ride especially if he is thick and stout. that is about the right size in my opinion for riding a coonhunting.

Mules

Most mules that people rode around here weren't that big. I'm six foot two and two forty pounds, and I've ridden a bunch that weren't that big many a night in the mountains. Mules are as tough as they come. We jumped them in the back of a pick-up with racks in twenty degree weather and went hunting. If you did that with a horse he'd have pneumonia. I have a mule now that backs out of a horse trailer. He got used to backing out of a pick-up.

Mine goes 14.2. She is between 10 and 14 years old..... I am 6 ft 223lbs and she hauls me up and down these mountains around the Ohio River just fine.
