worms, what kind is this?

i know what a tape worm segment looks like, a piece of rice. today i saw a worm on my dogs rump, it was, i'm guessing, 1/32" in diameter and about 1'" long and the same color as a tape worm. what kind of worm is this?

That could very well could have been a tape worm. Adolescent hook worms resemble a round worm. Tape worms are more likely to be on a dog's rump than any other worm because of their anatomy. Their heads have several hooks that have the ability to anchor on skin and hair to where other species of worms lack the ability to attach to anything outside of the intestinal tract.

The best thing to do is to take a worm (if you can get it) or a fecal sample to your vet or even a local college so that it can be identified under a microscope.

I did a search for hookworms. there's a picture of one and it is clearly a hookworm. i will give the monthly heartworm preventitive on the first of Dec. and wait 2 weeks and give a general wormer.

hookworms are small, thin worms about one quater of a inch long.they fasten their mouth parts onto the mucosa of the small intestine and suck blood and tissue fluids from the host.this can result in severe blood loss and malnutrition. inadult dogs, the most common routes of infection are ingesting larvae ans larvae migrating through the skin. some larvae encyst in tissues, while others milgrate through the lungs to the intestine where they mature into adults.in two to three weeks the dog begins to pass eggs in the feces.these eggs incubate in the soil. under proper conditions, the eggs hatch in 48 hours and relase larvae that are infective in five to seven days. a number of of dewormers are highly effective in treating hookworms.they include nemex, panacur, drontal plus and vercom paste.treatment should be repeated in one to two weeks, because the intitial deworming activates encysted larvae and cause a new crop of adult wormsto appear in 10 to 12 days.
