Breeding Questions

I have an 8 year old male coonhound that will not attempt to breed a female. A year ago a buddy drove 2 hours to breed his female to him, she was flagging and he would not attempt to breed her. He would smell her and act like he was interested then he would just walk away. I finally got frustrated and took them to the Vet and got her Artificialy Inseminated. The Vet said he had a good sperm count but this only resulted in one pup. Tonight another guy brought over his nice female and the results were the same as a year ago. I raised this male from a pup and I never attempted to breed him until he was 7. My questions are has anyone else ever had this problem and is there anything that can be done to give this dog some desire to breed? I have seen plenty of dogs that were poor preformers in the breeding pen but this is the first one that I have seen that wouldn't even try. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John

A couple of points not mentioned.

# 1) Females are often not ready or are past being ready many times when brought to a stud dog. We can not bend a dog's cycle to meet our schedules.

# 2) Some males want privacy.

I talked to a friend last night and she suggested that I kennel the 2 of them next to each other and that might make him want her. I didn't have much faith in the idea so I called the Vet and set up am appointment to get her AI. I put them together as soon as I got off work and the results were the same as yesterday and last year. No attempts on his part. I thought want the heck so I kenneled her next to him because I had 3 hours until the appointment at the Vet. I put them together about 45 minutes before I had to leave and low and behold it worked. I couldn't believe it. I called the Vet and cancelled the appointment while I was waiting for them to unhook. Thanks so much Jodi for the advise I sure do appreciate it!

I appreciate all the advice from everyone else that responded also!

THANKS TO ALL!!

If you want to get your old dog's semen stored, I'm looking into starting a AI breeding, Collection and storing business here in Southern Ohio. Check it out here.

Respond to it if you like.
Sounds like your dog is getting up in his years, but sounds to be a fine hound.
Best time to store semen is between 2-5 years old.
Thanks,
Jeremy
