Wick's early deer breaking intervention...
I have been reading John Wick's book. Has any one ever tried to train their pups off of deer by using the electric fence method?
You hang the scent gland of the deer from the fence, and when the pups goes to smell it.....OUCH!!!!!
I know a man that trains Gascons that uses this method and he says it works. Do any of you guys or gals use this?
Thanks,
Scott
Yup , I tried it.
The dog I tried it on never started a deer in her life. She ran only about 3 , with other dogs starting them , in 12 years. Only thing is , don't know if it was the hotwire thing or if she was that way natural.
But if you have the glands and the fencer , it won't hurt anything to do it.

Deer breaking
Yes, I've used a deer leg with gland. Ran 8 dogs through the pen. ALL but a couple of adult Plott sure enough COONHOUNDS checked it out & got zapped. However, an adult Bluetick who was a confirmed deer chaser opened at the gate on the scent, ran at a dead run 40 feet to the leg, got Zapped, ran out of the pen yiping like she was scalded. The next time in the woods she immediately ran a deer. Gene Sowell told me he believes it's important to do the ZAP program BEFORE taking dogs to the woods. This particular Bluetick was finally broken off deer with several strong electronic collar lessons in the woods.

my buddy used it one time and the next time he hunted his dog he was working a track and came up on a deer scrape he sat down on the ground and started like squalling and peed all over himself....we thought something had got him...henever ran deer again and turned out to be a hell of a coondog
i've seen it used before and all it accomplished was breaking them from deer in the pen and had no effect on them when hunting.

I'm sure your talking about hanging the scent gland from a " hot wire " , right?
If I remember right , it says to do this when they are pups , BEFORE you take them hunting.
I don't belive it will break dogs that are already running deer.
I do believe it is a good prevetion method.
Like I said before , you will NEVER know for sure if it was this or if the dog was born straight. But as long as the dog don't run deer , who cares?
