Dog's Driving Me Crazy!!

I got this just turned 3 year old English dog that is driving me crazy. He can tree coon all night long, and as accurate as they come. He checks back so much that I spend most of the night moving forward and repeatly encouraging him to go hunt.

This dog only needs 10 points to be a field champion, 10 points to be a water champion, has a 1st place in the hunts and could be shown on the bench. ( I bet he could quad champion out)

But he is an absolute embarrassment to take to the night hunts, which I have only had him at one. He will wonder around the cast acting like he is looking for something, and when another dog strikes, he will run his butt off, get second strike, and beat the dog to the tree. As soon as we recast, all the dogs will kick dirt in your face, but my dog will pull up about 50 yards and just mill around unitl a dog strikes and hes off like his ass is on fire.

Like I said, when I hunt him alone, we walk and he will tree one coon after another. I don't know what to do, I thought about switching/ecollar him everytime that he comes back, but I don't want to screw him up more then he already is.

You guys got any ideas?

Sounds like a prime example of a dog that never got hunted alone. Only way is never turn him with another dog not even at a nite hunt until he is going hunting good on his own. Best of luck

My advice would be to stop walking it. He is used to you doing that and expects it. Cut the dog loose and find a comfortable place to sit down. Sit there for 2 hours if you have to. If the dog wants to tree a coon bad enough he will eventually go hunting for one. If he doesn't go hunting, put him on the lead and go home. Do this night after night and hope that he gets the picuture. The biggest thing is to get him to stop expecting you to walk with him. I know a guy who has done this with a couple of dogs with success. Good luck.

once a dog is not a pleasure to hunt its time to move it.

i had a gyp back in the 80's just as you described. fast, cold nosed track dog, fast locater, hard tree dog. LAZY strike dog IN COMPANY. i could take her by herself and she would hunt pretty good out about medium(out to about 400yrds). the only hope is to start hunting it more by itself. mine never came out of it in company. it was like two different dogs alone and in company.

I have used the sitting dn. methed more ofton than any other. Do this 3 weeks in a row making sure you take him to good coon places where he should stike a track. if you will do this foe 3weeks every night your problem will be fixed! ( 1 of 2 thing will happen he will start hunting or you will be tierd of him) Good luck
