Cat questions

Ok guys I have what I think is a lion on my hands but Im not sure. I know that there has been a deer carcass found in a crotch of a tree 15 to 20 foot up. i have watched for cat tracks but havent seen anything but the ground is pretty hard and dry right now. Is there anyway to know for sure? We cant hunt then or nothing but The lady who owns the house where we think It or they are hanging out and is just wanting to know she has dogs and Doesnt want them to get snatched up any help would be nice.

Hmmm.....

Number one.... Cat's don't particularly hunt from trees. And when they make A kill they tend to bury them in the shelter under the trees. Have not ever seen A cat take A kill up into A tree to feed. That's more of A bird thing. So the obvious question is how big is the deer in the tree. If it is A fawn or small yearling then I would tend to think this is A Eagles work. In all my years of lion hunting I have never seen or heard of A lion kill being taken up into A tree. And have never seen A lion climb A tree to hunt for that matter. But hey, just about anything is possible. Trail cam would be A good way to find out what it is for sure... Good luck in the hunt for A answer.

The only cat species that I've ever heard of that takes its kills into a tree is the cheetah, so they're not robbed by the lions and hyenas. Maybe you have a loose exotic pet.

Leopards and thier close relative the Jaguar will carry thier kill up a tree. I have never heard of a lion doing it but anything is possible. It does sound like you may have an exotic on your hands and yes they will eat dogs too. Where are you located? There are Jaguars moving into the southwest across from Mexico. But not many. Mostly in New Mexico and Arizona in the White Mountain range I believe. Camera traps sounds like a good idea.

That doesn't sound like the doings of a couger to me either. If your in Michigan it's most likely a bald eagle. If it is a cat for some reason it will be gone in a couple days and the animal would not be far from it now. And if you disturb it ,it will be dragged to a new hiding spot.If a bird left it there other scavengers will finish the deer off.

I appreciate all the help guys I dont know what size deer it was but i never thought about eagles that would make sense and it wouldnt suprise me if there were exotics around here they found a few panthers or jaguars or something aout four years back living one county over and never got them out so that could be it too. I gues Ill have to get me a camera trap and see if I can figure it out.
