just had to get my two cents worth in. I started hunting in the early sixties and it was hard to find a pup that would make a real pressure tree dog. The treeing was lacking in coonhounds back then. Since then we have over adjusted the tree dog to the point that we need more tracking ability but even if we had the balance we are striving for. A large % of pups would still get ruined by dumb handlers like myself. Impatience and bad tempers can ruin a lot of pups. Not to mention SHOCKING COLLORS and NO BARK COLLARS. There are more good coon dogs today than there has ever been. The biggest problem is jealousy, people who bash every stud dog and owner they see in the magazines..

Very well said. Jealousy is a trouble thing to have. A coondog will win more hunts than a so called comp. dog, I think.

i agree 100%,everydog i own i have trained myself and if u breed a coon hound to a coonhound u have a better chance but it is all up to the trainer

90% of pups today never get an honest chance and then only 3%of the other 10 get in good hound peoples hands. its not a magic wand its about patience and putting the pup in the woods that he can develop his traits that he was born with. you can train a dog to sit/stay/fetch etc.. 99% of what a coonhound is he is born with it and we take some much credit for the other 1% whick entails driving him to the woods and opening the door on the box and maybe putting them on a bucket or 2 when there just starting. a hound learns what he learns from repetition and if he is blessed with the traits he needs we can just spend alot and i mean aot of time honing them.jmo
