Our Hounds Today?

As I was hunting last night (and my dog was doing something I didnt think was right) I was thinking do we tend to foregive our hounds for things they do. What I mean is do we foregive them of things because of comp. hunts. Like when they lose a track and we know they pick up a different track but we think it's OK because the 8 did'nt catch them. Or they barked off on a rabbit ,but its OK because they got first stike. Or we know they left a tree but its OK because as long as the 2 doesnt get them and they come back on the tree. Or we know in our hart the tree is slick, but it's OK because we can still circle it. I know some guys are going to say (NO WAY I DONT DO THAT), but do you every once in a while? I know that I find my self doing it at times. I'm not trying to put down comp hunts I love to compete so dont try that. I was just stating my thoughts on it. So what do you gyes think and be honest.

I think that you're right...

There is a competition dog that you want to stay on top of all the time to make sure that he does everything like he "should" in a competition hunt.

There is a pleasure dog that you don't mind if he does a couple of things wrong as long as he ends up with the meat and don't make a habit of it..

Competiton hunting, it's bad if dog leaves tree if handler calls dog treed.

Pleasure hunting, it's good if you have a dog that will circle tree to make sure coon is there and hasn't tapped trees.

Whether it's in a competition or pleasure, if our dogs slick trees-which yes it does happen-they don't get praised, or anything.

I can see where you're coming from.

Alot of it comes from giving the hounds "the benefit of the doubt, because what if it is a coon"......

No I don't do that at all. I'd rather my dog circle the tree like I SHOW her how to be sure "RICKY" is there. More trees are tapped than climbed. More often if you comp hunt you'll get those dogs that lock down immediately. I KNOW!!! TCB

I think what you're asking is do we rationalize bad behavior? YES, we do. Do we do it based on nite hunt rules? Yes, sometimes.

But, whether I comp. hunted or not, I'd want a dog that could move a track, a dog that stays treed and leaves no doubt, and a dog that has the coon when it trees and it trees often.

I think maybe you have pointed out some "modern" rationalizations and some good ones. But, lets not fool anybody, they were rationalizing dog's behavior before any of us were born. That dog that couldn't move the track was cold nosed, that weak treeing dog was checking his tree, and that slick treeing dog just so happened to pick a den tree, where of course, "there has to be a coon".

So, everybody just has to figure out what they have to have in a hound, work towards their goal, and let the chips fall where they may.

The point I was trying to make was do we try to make excuses for our dogs useing night hunt rules. I've heard it said owell he would'nt have been minused in a hunt so they think it's allright.
We have a younger generation being raised in nite hunts and this is how they are traning their dogs.

O ya this is Joey I'm useing a different cumputer.
