Should a dog leave one track for a fresher track?

Say a dog is running a track and comes to another track that cross's the one he is running. Shoud he stay on the track he started or take the hotter track?

When he opens on a track, I feel he is dedicated to that one. I've seen young dogs break down to a better track, but an experienced dog will follow it through. Where we hunt you can walk down the edge of the field, shine your light in the tree line and see lay up coons scattered on the creek, but the dogs are on that one track and will hang with till the end.

I was just wondering about this. When I was in man tracking the blood hound guys were split on this. Some wanted them to keep attention to track and run it like it comes.
Others if the track crossed itself would want the dog to take the fresh leg of the track.
Yet some wanted such dedication to track that if they air scented the man they were tracking 20 ft. up wind. They wanted that hound to ignore that air scent and work that track.
Of course they were staying with the same man no matter what.
Me if my dog was tracking and found a faster way to find a victom it better do it.

I was just wondering how you guys felt about it. I know a dog would be switching from one coon to another but since your not looking for a certain coon that wouldn't matter.
I would want mine to come of the older track and work the freshest thing it came across if it was a dog I was training for comp.
But for fun I would want it to work it as it was laid.

Think about summer time hunting when all those little coons are on the ground. 6 small coons and 1 momma on the ground, all the baby's playing on vines, marking trees and in water holes. That's a bunch of hot tracks and total confusion to a pup on which to go with. A good young adult or old dog knows exactly which one to run, the momma. She has more scent and thats the one they will stay with.

Good subject. I would want my dog to finish what it starts.....BUT some of the better hounds I have had would start a track only to pick off a better track and finish with a bang with the coon. Cant stop them either.

LOL No it isn't worthless. It will bring a good price from older guys like myself that like to hear a good race. As long as they know how to work one, don't take all night , have a good voice AND puts a coon on the end of it.

Man, as long as they end up with the meat........ I'm a happy man. Who is to say that every dog doesn't do this at one point or another? Just my opinion. Now I know my dogs as good as, if not better than the next man. I can almost tell you exactly what kinda track they are runnin by the way they ball on the trail. If its hot or cold, all that good stuff. But, BUT there have been times that i had no idea what they were doin, i have been just stumped. Was it an ol' boar that was tossin out tricks? Backtrackin, somethin else? Or have they run smack into the middle of a coon hot spot? I've heard my two dogs go nuts like that and then go different direction and end with two coons in two different trees, hundreds of yards apart. Can YOU, as a hunter/handler honestly say that your dog NEVER changes trails. Just a thought. Sorry i gotta little deeper into that than i intended.

What about comp. If your dog goes after moma coon and my dog nail's the first kitten the moma puts up. I am going to be treed and you are going to be chaseing moma.

If he laughs as hard as I just did he will declare me WINNER!!!!!!! just for the free entertainment.
We need to go cut the dark together some time. My dog can entertain us and we will see atleast one coon at the end of the night with your dog. Hunting trip a BIG SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

We will have to hunt at your spots. There isn't enough coons down here to put down more then 2 or 3 tracks out a night...LOL

I would like a dog that can work whatever track it has BUT if it hits a hotter one that it can tree fast I would rather it do that than have it track all night. I think alot of dogs do this. How many times have you heard a dog make a tree that just didn't match the track they were running.

Yep I would agree. I think most of todays dogs would go for what ever was the hotest scent.

I want him to tree a coon quicker, so I wouldn't have a problem with him switching from one coon track to another to get a track that might go up a tree quicker. I can always cut him back loose and hopefully he can go on and tree the rougher track. But I agree I don't know how you can tell this is happening

Taking this a little further you get to dogs that will tree the last coon up when more than one coon is running together. They go past a coon to keep tracking. You can tell this when your buddy's dog pulls up treed, has a coon, and yours is trailing to parts unknown. This tees me off.

Thats called a problem that needs addressed. A dog that quits a track to pick up a hot track to get treed quick is diffrerent. imo

LOL That is no problem for a good hound. Any hound that can read a road map shouldn't have any problem. LOL

What if that fresher track they switch over to doesn't have rings on it's tail? LOL

Personally, I don't want them passing underneath several coons while running a track. I would prefer they nail down the coons sitting up & also tree the track they were on if cut loose again after treeing the laid up coons.

You guys talking about them going under coon while tracking. You have to remember Just becouse you see coon up on the way to the dogs doesn't mean the dog crossed that coons track. The coon could had just been comeing toward the dog heard it and ran up. The coon could just be comeing out of a den and not been down wet. May be no way for the dog to know it is there with out borrowing your light. LOL

I knom my dogs like the back of my hand, this came from weeks of just me and them together in the woods but I cannot sit here and tell you I know when they "switched" tracks. I can take a wild guess and say sure they did or no they didn't but that's all I can do is guess. Now say I could tell forsure that they switched tracks, I would wan't my dog to finish the fastest track period. Why would anyone want to heve their dog run a two hour old track over a coon they are 60 feet behind? I sure wouldn't.

I can however tell you within the fierst minute or two if the track they are running is a good one or a bad one.

Yep I would agree. You have a pretty good guess some times but that is all it is. I would say most will just becouse of my experience with man tracking and knowing in that they have to be taught not to. If that is your preferance.
