Training hounds to come when called...

The more I hunt, the more I've come to find out that I appreciate a good handling dog. Plus, as others have mentioned in a recent post, some of the spots I hunt are getting smaller and closer to blacktop roads so I plan on working with every dog I hunt on coming in when called. A couple of them will generally come back when called, but it usually takes some convincing.

What are some of the methods everyone has used to train their dogs to come in on command? After recently having to give one of my broke dogs a little reminder that it's NOT a good idea to give in to a sight deer race, I no longer pleasure hunt my dogs without the Tri-Tronics. I've heard using an e-collar can work wonders when putting a handle on a dog, but I'd like to hear some methods that have worked for different people.

A good TriTronics with a TONE button !! I have always trained my hounds to Return on TONE .. They Come in Get Petted Up some then Recasted ..

Another Options is the Bird Hunters Point/Locate Tone Add-on

I have even Used A Walkie Talkie in a Water Proof Pouch on the Collar .. It Works Great !!!

I use the tri-tronics as a last resort for most things like trashbreaking.

The main thing I use it for is putting a handle on a dog, teaching a dog to come when called is a lifesaver somtimes.

Im not smart enough to use a tri-tronics for many problems at once, so I limit its use to when I have run out of options.

I started trainin mine to come to a dog whistle 'bout three year's ago & wish I woulda a long time ago. Majority of mine is done in the yard as puppy's on up. There is that occassional one that has selective hearing that need's a lil of the wax loosened up but for the most part I don't need the juice.

Start as your feeding them,a lil bit before you feed & soon they will know it's time to eat & get excited when they hear it. If your able to let them run loose like I do it quickly become's the meaning of sumthin good like table scrap's or the desire to do a whole lota pettin etc, good posative thing's.

I seldom ever use an E collar at night. If you don't have them acclimated to it & you try callin them in while adding a lil juice they are gonna head the other way & reverse what your tryin to do.

I can call pretty much all of our's in with the whistle but I ain't gettin them to drop a good track or off a tree. I do have one that will come off a tree to me if'n I can get his attention but not consistently.

Huntin young dawg's alone & usin it has been the answer for the final prep work in understanding that that mean's "Ya'll Need 'Ta Come In Now". Seen more than one head shake as we do it at the end of a hunt. Beat's the crap outa circlin the wagon's & runnin net's out. I think it's awful funny to watch people with their garmen in their hand chasin the dog around....LOL!!

They ain't smart 'nuff to learn their name then you have a challenge on your hand's.

Every pup I ever hunted was trained to come in with the TriTronics and I have never seen one run the other way when shocked. Not even one. They alway make a beeline to the truck when shocked and by the third lesson, they are doing it from the tone button only. The downside is that if they hit a hotwire, (and that is common in this area) they are heading for the truck.

I start mine the same way as Two toes.

I have seen one being "trained" with a shock collor that turned and ran 2 miles when he was hit with the juice. Straight to Hwy 1. My boy found him the next morning in the ditch.

If you need to get a handle on them, start while they are pups. If your not fortunate enough to have them in the early stages, then you may have to resort to something differant.

Rain ~ Jess, you know who I'm talking about ~ will not come when she's called even NOW, thanks to some wonderful "training" when I started her in the woods. That is the only thing I hate about her. It could wind up costing her her life.

I start with a check cord about 50 feet long. When they get to the end of it I call their name and pull on the cord. I will pull them in if they dont come. When they come to me, I pet them up real good and let them know that I am happy with them. After I have done this for a week I just let them run in my big pen with the check cord on and go about my business around the kennel, when I want them to come, I get near the end of the cord and call their names and tug a little and they come running. After this for about a week I then put the tri-tronics on them and use the tone and pull on the rope. This method works and I have one that will come from anywhere at anytime.

I have to Agree with Jim "I have Never had 1 that was tought Properly with the TONE and Never had a Drop of Juice Ever given to them ever turn and Run Away"

Watch the Trainning DVD that you get with your TriTronics ..

Now at Roads I train with Juices !! My Hounds are Not Allowed to Cross a Paved Road.. And the will go VERY Slowly across a Gravel Road !!! LOL

it all starts in the backyard.i have seen dogs react 2 ways
as you said and just freeze up.

I have an old hunting dog a friend of mine acquired at age 5 - he'd never hunted before but when started at age 5 he treed his own coon first time out and never looked back - BUT he was a deep hunter and WOULD NOT come in to a call. He trained him with a shock collar: It only took a couple nights. call him, give him a minute, shock him, repeat. Last time I saw him hunt with him the dog was on the other side of a lake and the dog bailed into the lake and couldn't get back fast enough when called! He was smart enough however to know when he didn't have the shock collar on, and until he retired at age 10 always had to have a collar, or at least a dummy shock collar, on him or he wouldn't come when called.

Like two toes I have seen dogs run for miles when hit with elec.
I have know people that took a bird dog out and lost there dog and collar first day out.
I do train with the ecollar BUT AT HOME. I start with the 50 ft. check cord and a very slight nick. I use the Dogtra with the rhyestat switch so I can give them exactly the amount I need to. Then I Vibrate( dogtra has vibrate instead of tone) and start the nick and nick nick like a heart beat till they get to me.
Teaches them the only way they can stop the elec. is to come to me. After they have learned that I can vibrate and they come. They don't have to hear anything so they don't have any excuse not to come.From there it is a balanceing act makeing the punishment fit the crime. Get distractions around the house and the dog interested in them and call dog. Don't do it when the dog is hunting till you have the dog leaveing any and all distractions at home and comeing.
When he knows the command, knows the punishment for not obieying the command. Then IF you can't get to a tree or the dog is going to get ran over you can call it in. Off a track,tree or any thing else with out messing up your dog. As long as you don't do it to much. Call them in to much and you will find they won't go as deep.

I was wondering if it would be possible to train them to come to the tone only without ever giving them the juice?

The reason is I have NEVER had a problem getting mine to come in to their called name AS LONG AS THEY COULD HEAR ME. I start teaching them to come to me as a pup. I did this all my life, even when I was 10, didn't know it was a big deal LOL.

Hearing me seems to be the problem.

I have also never had one that I could call off a track or tree unless I was right there at them, but I have been unable to figgure out if it was from them not hearing me or because they didn't know they HAD to come in until they could see my light.

Seems like after I get their attention they will come in, which makes me think it's a hearing problem and I have always thought maybe they could hear the tone even while treed/tracking etc.

That would be nice it it will work. I got a couple pups comin I think I will try that.

Yes you can but if you can get the elec. so slight that they can hardly feel it and train them to that. Then you can make them come if they ever refuse. Nice on sight deer race to highway or something and as long as they never refuse the elec. never hurts or is a problem. The thing about the elec. is most people use way to much heat and don't teach the dog what it is even for.

i have a buddy that bought a dog they said you couldnt call him
i used a whistle on him and he would come in selective hearing
like we get after being married a long time.i train whistle,tone
shock like your mom use to do 1,2, she never had to get to 3.

Good ideas from all so far. I've been hesitant to use much more than the tone on the e-collar because I was afraid a couple of mine would take off rather than come in if hit with the juice. I DO know the female that wanted to play deer dog will come back when hit with the heat...we actually saw her cross a cutover after it, and I have to admit I lit her butt up. She yelped once and made it back to my side in a hurry. Took a couple of turn-outs to get her hunting back "normal" again, but the deer problem has been solved. Tried toning her the other night to get her to come out of some private land, and she totally ignored me. She acted like she was bumping around on a track, so I didn't want to put the heat on her. Anyway, long story short, I'd like to find the most effective way to teach them without RUINING them with the e-collar. Looks like we'll be having some quality time in the yard soon!

I call them, then tone them, then turn it up and hit them with it... Pretty soon they learn that the tone is what they want to come to if they have ignored me calling them.. Most of my hounds actually mind better then my house dog...

I don't go and drop them in the woods to see how they handle getting hit with the e-collar... I do it at home so it is more controlled.. I have had only a couple dogs run the other way when shocked... Funny thing is, those dogs didn't last at my house..

I'm not much on repeated bumping with the collar either (on the lowest settings that the dog might listen to or ignore) If they do that on 2.. I generally put it to 4.. I want them to know that me calling them and the tone mean NOW...

It has worked great for me...

It has worked great for me...

Once they learn what the vibarte means and the elec is the punishment for not minding. Mine has been known to yelp about every heart beat to me. If I think they are comeing and I give them a little bit I won't nick at all but if they don't start comeing. Once the nick starts it don't stop till they get to touch me.

Kickapoo has the right idea. I like to use 550 cord (commonly called parachute cord). It is very light, but, strong enough to pull dogs in when called. I do it about the same as him, altho, sometimes I will use food (milkbone, pieces of hotdog, etc) to entice a heavy food driven dog. I generally do this in a controlled environment like a softball field that is fenced in.....to keep the dog from getting away from you and the cord when you eventually drop the cord to let them have their head. I introduce the E-collar after a few sessions with the cord to reinforce their behavior. Their is no better feeling when time out is called and you know you can call your dog when they are close....or they are near a road and their life depends on it. I generally start it at the end of a police k/9 leash in basic obedience, but, I've gotten a little lazy in my latter years...The key to using the e-collar is to use the lightest setting that gets the job done. When you crank the setting up is when you get the flight issue with dogs busting out of the country.

I had a 5 year old hound that everytime you hit her with any juice she ran to and inside the closest building she could find. Must have done that for previous owner. That was a pain having to go in somebodys barn at 2 or 3 in the morning. Wish I would have had a Garmin then. Maybe I could have headed her of at the pass !! LOL But yes the Tritronics tone and shock with a 50 foot lead in the yard is the only way to go!!

LOL Want to have fun take a overly protective womans dog to demo. how to train with elec. and find out at the lowest setting ( witch you can't feel at all) makes the dog SCREEM. I needed a barn to hid in. Trained that one to vibrate only. LOL
