if all of you would stop taking coon into the buyers the price would come up BUT we know that will not happen, the buyers have been putting the shaft to us for years.

All you have to do is ship them if you dont like your buyers prices.

If people quit taking fur to buyers... that would not do much to the price right now. There is more to it than that.

I did not say I did not like my buyers prices, if you think you get more by shipping your coon figure the amount of time you have in them fleshing and drying them and the cost to ship them , and you have to weight on your money.

as far as helping now you can keep coon in a freezer for a year or more if it is done right, the price of fur has never went down. not when a buyer will pay 25.00 each tail count, then you tell me the price has dropped.
KRIS if everyone would hold there coon for a year or two you would see the price come back up.

The Russians and Chinese are the top buyer of fur.

Neither of those countries are doing good right now. If they don't buy... ain't nobody selling.

Correct. Russia's economy is based mainly on oil & gas prices. If its a hard winter fur prices may increase slightly, but not nearly enough for me to skin a coon.

All this talk about fur prices being low..... Who cares. Instead of shooting a bunch or keeping till maybe next year, how about having more coon to start that young hound? Shoot less.... Tree more. Personally, I enjoy treeing them more than shooting them. No offense guys, just my own thoughts.

I don't know a thing about the whys or whatfors of the fur industry. I just know the guy I sold to is third generation fur buyer I sold to his Dad and his Granddad, and he don't want coons but will take the very biggest ones for a buck or two. Of the other three local buyers, one isn't buying coons till Dec. and the other two are done. My guy did say he would probably give a better look at the Dec. coons, right now ours are not prme.

Dumb.

Almost all coon go are historically purchased by Greece, Russia, and China. Russia's economy is nearly non-existent due to sanctions and oil prices, Greece and China are in recessions.

NAFA auction house is sitting on 750,000 coon from last season, they cancelled their September auction due to no international buyers. Add all the coon in people's shops and freezers probably a million coon in the country. Lots of inventory and no sign that these countries economies are going to improve any time soon. And when they do it will take years to work through the inventory. I haven't "seen" it but I have nearly 200 sitting at NAFA from last season and know of several others with 100-400 sitting there also.

Fur market is going to be in a bear market for 3-5 years or more even if you "put them in your freezer".

I don't think you can hold hides in Illinois. I may be wrong but thought they had to be sold soon after season went out.

Not sure what low prices you have experienced the "last few years".

12-13 season had fairly strong prices ($14-$18 averages) 13-14 season took everyone by surprise with the later auctions bringing VERY STRONG prices($18-$25 averages). Everyone thought 14-15 season would be similar. That is when a lot of the financial unraveling started in the major buying countries. Wasn't until late in the season that everyone realized how bad it was when the first FHA and NAFA auctions took place. By that time most serious hunters and trappers already had most of their catch made, put up, and shipped.

There ya go. Now you can go put your head back in the freezer for a year or two and see if that helps.

That is true to a certain point. I don't know about other parts of the country but last time we experienced a prolonged down fur market and the trappers quit and hunters stopped shooting them it led to outbreaks of distemper and other diseases wiping out entire areas. This was about 8-10 years ago. I had several hunting spots that got hit. It took a couple years for the population to rebound. It also leads to more farmers using fly bait and other poisons to annihilate coons year round indiscriminately.
