What are your favorite dog breeds besides coonhounds?

First off, I want to say I love all dogs. I'm a dog person through and through. However, naturally I have my favorite breeds. The love for hounds is in my blood. I grew up with my father coon hunting so the first dogs I probably laid eyes on were coonhounds, walkers to be exact. Getting my interests and personality from my father's side of the family, it makes sense that I would love the kinds of dogs I do. My great-grandfather and uncles had foxhounds. Hounds run in our family on that side.

My top 3 favorite dogs in all the world are coonhounds, foxhounds, and beagles. I like hunting dogs, period. I have a beagle, and I LOVE to hear her bawl. That little girl has a mouth on her. I love the sound of a hound. It's music to my ears. The thing so wonderful about coonhounds is the fact that they are pure American, bred right here in the good ol' U.S.A.

My favorite groups of dogs are hounds and sporting dogs. I like pointers, and I like labrador retrievers, any dog that is involved in sporting activities. I also like blackmouth curs. However, I honestly think that any dog I own for the rest of my life will either be a coonhound, a foxhound, or a beagle. There's just something about those kinds of dogs. While I would have the others if I couldn't have my 3 favorites, why not have what you truly love?

Right now I have two Blueticks, two Catahoulas, two Plotts, one Leopard hound, one Redtick, one Pitbull and three Anatolian Shepards. My favorite of the bunch is my ASD male, Willie Boy. But if I could only have one breed it would be Catahoulas as I have had them since 1970 and they are the most loyal dogs I have ever owned. Primarily I have always been a Plott man as far as hounds go but in the last year I added the others. My ASDs are for livestock protection, which the Catahoulas also assist in. And over the years I have had every breed of hound there is as well as most types of curs. But Catahoulas are and will always be my favorite.

GREYHOUNDS!

Retired racing greyhounds! Have LOVED owning them and we will again once we're too old to deal with the bratty coonhounds....

I like most types of dogs... as long as they are not mean or too shy.... Mutts are fine... Prefer a laid back type though, like the hounds... terriers are a bit too feisty for my slow life style....

Life without dogs would stink! HappyHunting Heather

In addition to our coonhounds, we've always had a Rottie or a Rottie/German Shepherd cross around the house. They make excellent pets! Here is our first "Heidi"... The first pic was taken probably when I was about 8 years old. Some good memories with that ol' girl! I have an older sister and brother, and a younger sister. That dog was always with us when we were out playing in the yard, at the bus stop every day waiting on her kids, and always slept at the foot of the stairs to our bedrooms at night. I always felt safe with her around and she's the dog that i grew up with. I'll always remember her and I hope that someday when I have children they can have a friend and guardian like her.

German Shepherds....
This is Hank, solid black, and about #115. Not a good picture.

This is his daughter Sadie, about #100. Both are smart and well behaved around everybody, just don't under estimate their loyalty to their family.

Elvira, thats awesome!! good lookin dog too!!

honestly, ive had ALOT of dogs through my life..rots, german shepards, various lap dogs, etc...

the only 2 breeds thats been in my life the entire time has been pits and walkers...

our current pitbull was a rescued dog...a drug raid was done and a fighting pit was found in the basement with a bunch of dogs...my dogs mom was in such bad shape she couldnt be saved but we got him when he was tiny...he's been my best buddy these past 10 years or so...im scared that when im gone these next 6 months or so (moving for work for a while..) that he'll be gone before i get back...hes getting old and i know it...the past 2 summers i done the same and he gets sick when i leave..doesnt eat and kinda mopes around and will sit at the door looking for me to pull in but i never do...when i get home he tackles me and wont leave me side and will cry for a few weeks anytime i leave..

amazing what a bond we can have with out pets...

lots of people say they cant make good pets...but he was born and bred to be a fighting dog plain and simple...but, he's never been rough with people other than when he was young i'd play rough with him..but i made sure he knew it was play time...

he'll bark at strangers and such..but if you come inside he will jump on you and give you kisses till your soaked...then beg you for a treat coz he doesnt know you and hopes you will give in to him lol...

Next to coonhounds i've always loved German Short-hair Pointers and Border Collies. I've had both mixed with another breed, we currently have a 5yr old GSP x GWP cross, she is very intellegent dog and eager to please. I also owned a Border Collie x Bluetick cross, by far one of my fav dogs, someday i'll own another Border Collie.
