Coonhound Prices

What's everyones take on what a coonhound pup goes for these days, in my opinion, they are very very cheap, labs go for no less than $400, and POODLES go for $600, and some other what I would consider useless dogs, for more. How can coonhounds be so cheap? And so much more work is put into them. (nothing against lab owners, they do put in work) To me a coonhound is worth so much more.

Posted by jackback on 10-06-2008 01:22 AM:

I know what you mean. People pay upwards of 1000 for some of the "lap" dogs that do absolutley nothing to earn their keep.

Blows my mind!

Posted by Travis Eastman on 10-06-2008 01:38 AM:

Some guys are also asking 1500 for a 8 week old pup. To me that is alot of money to pay for a dog that may or may not make a coon dog. I guess you could turn them into a couch dog like a lab right lol

Even though there is likely to be no chance in he11 that I would ever pay 1500 for an 8 week old walker, I could see myself doing that before I paid 1000 for a Yorkie or a Poodle!

Posted by Tim Trone on 10-06-2008 01:47 AM:

the problem is if you raised the prices you would have a hard time selling them . you know we all dont have the money to pay much more then what we pay now .

Posted by on 10-06-2008 01:50 AM:

The reason coonhound pups are so cheap is because there are so many of them. There are hundreds of very well bred pups in most of the breeds. That has to depress the prices.

Posted by treemydogtina on 10-06-2008 01:53 AM:

its because most of the coonhunters do not have that much money, plus some with wives might not have a wife after he pays that much for a dog lol, them little lap dogs can be priced high because more women and like the richer people get them lol

GOOD POINT,ALSO WITH THE LAP DOG JUST BUY FEED AND PAY VET VISITS , WITH THE COONHOUND FOR A BEGINNER MOSTLY TIME YOU BUY FEED, PAY VET, BUY A LIGHT TO HUNT IT GET A BOX TO HAUL IT, GET A TRACKER TO FIND IT, A SHOCKER TO BREAK IT,AND GAS TO CHASE IT,WITCH IS CHEAPER????THE LAP DOG!!!!!!!

Posted by The Guide on 10-06-2008 02:21 AM:

Here's a story of how my current litter came about and why I posted this. I got a coonhound when I was a freshman in high school, I'm now a senior in college, this hound has been with me from the start, he was the first hound I ever laid eyes on and what got me into hunting coonhounds, He's a beautiful purebred walker that has put up tons of coon for me, and a handful of slick trees each year, but most all of the time its a coon. To me, he's one of the best I've hunted, and even done very well and even beat hounds that have sold for thousands, while out hunting for fun with friends that do hunt comp. seriously. And he'll die under my ownership, becuase I want him as my dog forever. 3 years ago I decided I wanted some pups out of him before he got too old and died or ran over, because you never know when they're going to go. He's still alive and I hope he'll be around for along time, but I wanted a pup of his to train with him. I also wanted his pups to be papered, I went on the hunt for a female coonhound that would be a perfect match. I figured it would take a while since I wanted to train a female from a pup into what I wanted in a coonhound. since he was just a hound that was given to me from a friend of a friend that pleasure hunted, and his parents were just unpapered pleasure dogs, I single registered him, which was fun because he has to tree a coon for the master of hounds, and he did in about 5 minutes and that was a fun night. anyways, it took a while to schedule it etc. and then i had him DNA profiled, and a batch of semen collected. I put him in a handful of UKC night hunts and got a 3rd place trophy one night, after that I really didn't do any more night hunts since all I wanted to do was see him place once to know he could do it. All this took years to do. training him only took till he was 7 months, but all the rest took years. So I found a female in Indiana that was very good looking, alot of black, which I liked because my dog has a decent amount of black, plus she had some good blood and was out of some good coondogs. So I got her, 9 hour drive and $300 later I had her in the truck heading back home, and then I trained her, that took three years, now she's a coondog and so this year I finally bred them. Ok so thats 6 years, and many of thousands of dollars later on gas because I live 45 min from my hunting spot and its $25 minimum on gas round trip, back when I used to hunt 5 nights a week, tracking GPS, Waders, Time, vet bills, registration fees, the list is endless, etc. and now this litter isn't even selling for $75 dollars? I'm not in it for money, becuase even at $400 a piece I still wouldn't even come close to making anything, but still, all that and 6 years later, and all that work and I mean work, and they aren't even going for $75. I'm really surprised. believe me I'm not posting this to sell my pups, I could care less about $75 bucks right now. I just can't believe that it was so easy to sell a litter of unregistered purebred labs for $400 a crack, and these are so much less. I know its taboo to talk about wanting money out of hounds, and people might think I want money when I say this, but it is rediculous for hounds to sell this cheap. maybe I'm nuts becuase I've not been in the game for a long time, but from a common sense standpoint I think its crazy, ever since I got into coonhunting. At that price any wackjob off the street with 75 bucks can walk off with my pride and joy that took 6 years to produce, its almost scary to think that. I seriously don't think I'll have any more litters, I'll just have to collect semen, and breed when I absolutly have to have a pup out of this dog.

just want to say Im not sayin nothin bad about women just that most of them can talk guys into doin stuff the usuall wouldnt do..... like my gf just made me put this lol

Posted by The Guide on 10-06-2008 02:31 AM:

With all the thousands it takes to coonhunt, whats an extra few hundred bucks for a pup anyways. I don't buy it that people don't have the money. Has a few hundred bucks ever stopped anyone from getting something that they really really wanted? maybe if your homeless, but even people I know that are barely making it, and have a hard time just eating, would still come up with a few hundred or even 5 hundred if they really wanted a dog and that was the lowest price they could get one for. And when it seems like alot of guys have a $30 thousand dollar truck and use maybe 50 bucks a night to hunt with gas and entrance fees, food etc. whats the difference in 75 or 500 bucks. Take a few nights off and you have a nice hound paid for in about a week or two. So I don't really think this is the problem. Maybe Jim is right, there are just too many pups out there, which would have to lower prices right?

they have been posted for a long time, at least a month I think, I've almost given up on the classified section, I think I can sell more locally because of the dogs reputation. I just got rid of one yesterday, of course I practically gave it away after trying for a month. there were only 5 in the litter.

Posted by m4rcut on 10-06-2008 03:18 AM:

if the dogs aint proven. . . . . . .titled or won a major hunt . . . . . most people wont buy them, 1 because they know nothing about them 2 because when they go to sell them no one else will want them 3 when they breed them no one wants that blood and finally most people have a specific bloodline they like and wont get a dog thats not bred like they like

i think one of the biggest reasons people dont pay that much for a pup is you have to go through a few (maybe 1000 dollars worth of pups) to find a decent one. where as a fancy poodle doesnt have to be real smart it just has to look pretty eat sleep and want to be loved. just my opinion. when the ave/ coondog pup goes for 1000 or even 800 im quiting this sport. i cant aford it as it is.
good luck on selling your pups though.

Posted by redhunter on 10-06-2008 03:51 AM:

The way I look at it, If someone invests $400 into a Lab pup, they are looking at something that will grow into a family dog. Probably sleep in the house. Has an easy to train reputation and generally good with kids. Now to have a hound as their family dog, theirs nothing wrong with that but hey got a dog thats naturally going to run off after game, and has a reputation of being stubborn/hard to train. When a hound hunter has a dog, if it doesnt tree right..too slow on track...wont hold pressure..slicks to many times then they get rid of it. Someone who has a lab knows chances are its going to retrieve. So what if it doesnt turn into a super gun dog, its their family pet and it will do its purpose. MIght spend 500 for a pet only dog..keep it 12 years or you could buy 5 hound pups at 200 a piece over 3-4 years before finding the right 1 that is what your lookin for.

About 7 years ago i bred my female to a grand nite dog. My female had no titles as all. I had no trouble at all getting $150 a puppy. I sold a few and could have easily sold more cause people kept calling.

how many places and what type do ya'll usually advertise in?

Posted by Buckshot on 10-06-2008 04:33 AM:

I just saw your ad on the 2 litters your selling.

http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthrea...threadid=231881

It might help to post pedigrees on the dogs and info.

It might help to separate the 2 ads as the top ad post is your crossbreed pups, then you make a post under it with a pic and no info except you have another litter for sale.

I personally normally skip those type of ads where there is a just a pic with a message that says UKC pups for sale.

Posted by The Guide on 10-06-2008 05:11 AM:

My post in the treeing walker section is alot more in depth complete with full pedigrees

Kinda of Funny .. We had a call about our pups and this fellow picked one off our Web Site .. He also asked if we would hang on to it and start training it, So we said sure for $250 per month..

He sent us a check for the Pup and 4 months of training .. Also at that time we had a Well Started hound for sale .. Well he said he would take her too.. We really had no Idea who this guy was but his Checks were good..lol

Well its about time for them to leave and this Fellow ask if we would meet him at our Local Airport ..

This is what He and his 2 new Hounds left in .. And the 2 hounds had their own Dog Beds Ready ..
They Now Fly around the World in their Own G-5

Oh we also Watch him had over $10,000 in Cash for Refueling ..

For $250 per month what sort of training did you personally do with them? Can you tell us what they were capable of when you delivered them steve?
