How do you teach a dog to stand in one spot at the tree?

Dogs

aren't machines. They have different tree styles. I don't think anyone can really teach that. It's just in them.

i have 2 dogs out of the same litter and one stands on the tree like a rock and the other is all over it and trys to climb is just the dog...

Ready mix concrete! lol! sorry I had to say it! That could be very hard to teach, Like treberta said, get to them fast, leash em short. That might help.

treberta's advice could very well leave you with a treejacking dog.
I take the tree style they give me and be glad they are there if they got a coon. I learned the hard way never to pet one up at the tree.

I agree with you JIM, I say the best way to train them to stand in one spot is to breed continously for that traight

Im with JiM also.

IMO Dogs that have to stand on the "sweet spot" tend to have a few more anger isssues than those that just tree.

I used to want them to look just like the pics you see in mags. Now I don't even care if they are on the tree at all, I just want them to show what tree to shine.

I HAVE always encouraged my dogs when they tree coon by petting them. Always will too. They need to know when they do something that pleases you opposed to something there not supposed to do.

I have not had a dog that slick treed very often. What works for me may not work for others but I will show my dogs most any night.

Jim, based on what he asked I would most definatly say the dog he has is already jacking the tree that's why he asked the question.

The most important thing to stop tree jacking is to handle them quickly and try to settle them down.

I always pet mine up on the tree if they have the meat and have not had a mean one yet. As for standing in one spot I dont care if he is on it or not just as long as he shows me something up there.

I have NEVER see a guy not pet his dogs and love on them a little when they did what they treed em a coon.

Loving on them when they do good is the only way they realize what's you want them to do.

i have never petted up a dog on a tree in my life unless its the pups first coon after that your just petting up troubel.pet them after you get 100 yards from the tree a littel and that is a nuff and if it is the pups first 10 coon he gets his coon shot out season or not a fine is cheeper for me then a mean dog,but thats just me becauls i have sean it first hand make gaters out of plenty dogs on the tree.david..ps no i dont kill all the coon i tree eather i just kill wat my dogs need is all i leave just as maney sit in season as i do out of season ,

Throw a black rope over a limb with a noose on it put it on the dogs neck when it jumps hold the dog up not enough to really cut off air when he stops jumpin pet him up let him know your happy an give some slack apply pressure as needed they usually catch on pretty quick these happy tree dogs can get in trouble at the tree in a comp hunt its a shame to see a real nice young dog get roughed up at the tree for bumpin or fallin on a can be alligater or touchy dog u can train a dog to sit so yes u can teach them to tree in one spot just remember u may change sumthin else when u change one thing about him think ur training method thru an make sure he knows what needs to be changed

If petting a dog up for having a coon makes them rough then 95% of all dogs are ALIGATORS

I HAVE NEVER SEEN A MEAN DOG CREATED BY PETTING THEM UP ON A TREE!!!!!!!! NEVER, if a dog is going to be mean it's going to be mean.

If you can get a consistent coon dog by not ever petting them up then more power to you. If by you pettin youre dogs up makes them mean then they were going to be mean naturally at soem point.

thanks for the replies. I have a young female thats a stay put tree dog, reel accurate so far. She is just all over the tree when u get there runs circles around the tree hops around the tree just wonedering if theres was any way to calm her down. Thanks again
